Question - Condensation in Luggage Boot?

Hi,

happy new year[8D],

recently when opening the luggage boot ( not at the moment as the car is burried in snow ),
there has been water running out of the bonnet chanels / dripping off the underside of the bonnet. - flowing back towards the bulkhead end as you lift the bonnet up.

Not exaclty a flood - but enough to mark something if it didn't like water!

Surprised to think the boot getrs hot enough to cause that much condensation.....or is it a leak[:mad:]


Any suggestions on how to avoid this - fill the boot with loft insulation / a duvet??

Mine is doing exactly the same thing ...... opened it yesterday and it was soaking. The car has been standing outside and not run for over a week.

Was going to mop what i could off when I got back from work, but it had all frozen up by then!

I'd assumed my car was missing some sound proofing or something on the inside of the bonnet, but sounds like there shouldnt be any if you suffer the same thing.

I'd be interested to know if there are any suggestions too?

yeah some stick on foam - like the the enginge bay sound pad?? - as long as it didn't absorb moisture.

It does seem to collect in the 'frame/chanels which run the length of the underside ( sure there's a better name for this part ) ' of the bonnet - you could squirt builders foam down it ( like shaving foam, but sets hard - but that stuff is very sticky, and tends to go everywhere as it expands.

Wooo Hooo boys - tell me you are NOT seriously considering this "expansion foam" !!!!!!!!! I am sure there must be a betta solution....
 
Perhaps it might be worth finding out where the water is coming from. A common cause is the windscreen washer jets. The bonnet has a plastic cover in the corner through which the washer jet pipes pass. The cover houses an elbow joint which splits over time. Every time you use the washers water is also sprayed under pressure into the bonnet. Also worth checking that the jets are securely attached to the bonnet and that the pipes connected to the system have the appropriate metal clasps. Bodyshps often don't bother with these.
Finally make sure the drains in the wheel well are clear. There are a few. The seal around the boot should be un-frayed too.
 
I've had this problem, but not all the time and I'm sure it is condensation. Hangs on underside of bonnet in the middle (near the badge - so I suppose the leak-around-badge theory could be right - but is very weather dependent.) When you open bonnet it tends to drop down on the carpet or whatever is there.

I like the idea of sticking a liner on the underside of the bonnet to absorb it until the weather gets warmer!
 
I've not experienced this but would suspect that if its not coming from the washet jets then it's condensation forming on the underside of the bonnet. Although it's possible that the leading edge seal may be allowing a bit of water past when driving or if parked facing a prevailing wind when it's raining but I would have thought that you would see tell tail water or staining inside.

As KO says I would steer well clear of expanding foam and sticking anything else to the underside of the bonnet may encourage rust unless you can ensure that there is not a gap between the insulation and the metalwork. Even a gap of a few thou can cause any water present to be drawn in by capillary attraction. Far better to find the cause and treat that rather than the symptom.

Still guessing it's condensation - but agree if there is/was leak - then the moistuire in the boot would add to the condensation symptoms.

while it does seem to 'run out' of the channles under the boot lid - there's also lots of condensation on the underside of the bonnet - that just hangs there![:(].

Spray foam ( yes the fun, expanding type [:-]) was a slightly tongue in cheek [8|]thought to fill the channels.....

Once the snow's melted and I can open the bonnet I'll have a hunt for the possible leaking spots.

If you culd buy the engine bay type sound insulation pad in bigger sheets - and it was stuck flush to avoid ( capillary ) - any thoughts on that ( accepting it would cover over the underbonnet porsche sticker.

My local motor factor supplied the heavy bitumen style sound deadening pads when I replaced the soundproofing in the doors that disintegrated a few years ago. That would provide some insulation to the boot lid and sticks like you know what to a blanket !! Came in big sheets you cut to fit with a Stanley Knife.
