Question - Trolley jack clearance?

Hi,

I need to get a new trolley jack as the old one has seals which leak - so the car gently lets itself back down to the ground...[]

I'm ideally after a jack you can use to get the car up in one go, so not have to lift up a side say, in order to then be able to get a decent sized jack slid in under the engine ( but at the same time, if a low and low jack costs a fortune then I might well be happy with using 2 ordinary ones! )

Does anyone know what clearance you need to get a trolley jack under a 993 ( at its lowest ) but also then how long it needs to be to reach in and pick up the underside of the engine.

Hope this doesn't seem lazy, as ordinarily yes I would get up and just go and measure it - but I can't get to my car today as it is in storage and wanted to order a jack.

Lots of sites offer 'low' trolley jacks for a bit of a premium. they all seem to need about 90mm of clearance.
But that is at the 'tip' and then the body gets a bit taller near the middle - say 130mm ish I think.

Any suggestions grateful received.
Thanks,

( In a way seems a shame the 993 does not have the side slot in jack plate position of the 3.2 Carrera which made life very easy )

Just drive the car onto a couple of bits of wood of the right thickness and width to allow an ordinary jack under. That's what I have to do to get my trolley jack under the cills since I lowered it.

I use the wood blocks too. I also have an aluminium racing trolley jack that is very low but unfortunately it's not very good so I can't recommend it. One of my bad buys.

Thanks all for the replies,

The taskmaster looks very advanced for my needs - don't do quite as much as you Maurice I think!

also always try to use jack stands / or other under the car - so hopefully I won't risk being under the car and relying on the jack[:D]!

I found an SGS low entry jack ( 89mm clearance [:)]) currently on sale at £34ish incl. vat. with 2 yrs warranty.
( in racing black )
Have also been keeping eye out for couple of lengths of 8" x 2" timber.

Anyone heard of SGS / have one of their jacks?
Thanks

I've got Taskmaster also- very robustly built. Fits under my RS. Expensive but recommended.

Can also recommend the Clarke sports car trolley jack which I've used for some 3 years or so in 1.3 tonne variant, 90mm clearance and £90 exc. VAT. Price hasn't gone up in ages, but buy on one of their VAT-free days at Machine Mart !
Certainly more expensive than £34 but reliable and good mechanicals / rubber pad etc, I've found. Is never used to hold the car up always just to raise it then slip in Clarke axle stand/s on the appropriate ratchet system notch for the job.

Graeme thats the jack I couldnt recommend above. I found the effort needed to raise the 993 was ridiculous - I must have got a bad one .

Interesting, John.

No problem there in my experience. Also, I like the fact you can raise it millimeter-perfect on the down stroke but that of course means each stroke moves the car less upwards than the 'raise-in-one-stroke' variety.
