Questions about respray

*First Post* First I'll say hi to all the other 944 owners. Had a 944 for about 6 weeks now and I love it.

Im currently in the process of stripping my 944 down for a respray. Ive got a few questions about the removal of a few components.

Firstly is the front badge panel removeable. Ive had a good look round it and I cant see any obvious way to remove it. If its not removeable any good tips on how to get the badge off so I can do a proper job of spraying it? Seems like Porsche went out of their way to make it hard to get at.

How can i remove these strips running accross the door and slightly into the wing? Im guessing they might pry/slide off but I would like some confirmation before I get at it.

Also theres a strip that runs above the top of the doors. It can be seen in the pic below. Does that just pull off?

Thanks for looking..

Hi and welcome!
I think the badge panel on your car is probably welded in place, look in the gap between this panel and the bonnet, there will be a row of screws on the badge panel if its a later panel, but on an 1984 I think this is unlikely.

The door protector strips do pull off, I'd gently heat them first and they will peel off although they will probably leave the rest of the adhesive on the paint which can then be removed with various chemicals (can't remember what we used now, but things like tar remover/petrol is probably fine). You may have to use a wheel to get the very last of it off, it's terribly strong stuff.

I'm not sure about removing the gutter on an '84 car, i'm sure someone will be along who has done it, but I suspect it'll be a push fit.

Front badge panel is removeable; two screws from inside the bonnet area and two screws accessible from the headlamp cut-out once the headlamp pods are raised.

edit - crossed with Peter. I assumed it was removeable as per my S2 (necessary on the S2 to get to the air filter) - I didn't know it was welded on earlier models but I'll bow to Peter's (much) greater knowledge.

Welcome to the forum [:)]

I won't add to what Peter and Ian have already said but you are the third new poster to the forum today, which is great news. We must have stopped being as grumpy as we normally are :ROFLMAO:

OK. I had very little sleep last night so I am sure I can bring the forum-grumpiness-quotient up quite considerably. []

Just need something (or someone) to be grumpy about now. Shame Brett928S2 fucked off. I could be VERY grumpy about him ... [][]

And a few more [][][][][]'s for good measure ...

Oli.

(ETA smilies. To make it look less grumpy. Not sure why I bothered really.)

Oil, now that King Boris is not introducing the increased Congestion charges, you should have every reason to be happy?!![;)]

Bl**dy Southerners......[:D]

Wouldn't have made any difference - I have yet to pay a penny to the Congestion Charge scam. (Although having Boris as a Mayor is a good thing, I'll grant you.)

Bloody Northerners! [:D]

Crikey, I'd be a bit worried about overspray hitting the 911 even if its only small particles of paint!

Heh, the 911 is my dads so im not too worried. I did ask him but he doesnt seem to think that will happen.

Edit: Looking at it I think it would be protected by its shield of dust.

Nice job. Looking at the pictures of your car, I think the rest of it will polish up with a bit of compound and a machine mop. No need to re-spray the whole car unless there is a bad colour match. Was the partial re-spray you did to remove stone chips??

The paint was badly sun damaged and the car has been t-cut several times by P/O's, I went through to the primer on the bonnet when I tried it. I'll probably do the whole car, I've never done it before so its as much for the experience as the end results. I'm starting a new job soon too so I have the time to mess about and do it now.

I did some wing repair last night, found some surface rust on the bottom of the wings. After some rubbing down, a coat of etch primer and several layers of stonechip I think it should be ok. Got the first coat on the wings and badge panel this morning, not got any pics yet though. I will sand them and give them another coat this evening. Wheels are coming off so tommorow they can be sent off to be refurbished.
