Hi all, Just a quick hello from a soon to be regular, I am hopefully getting my carrera supersport this weekend after a very long search for the right one. The turbo was at the top of the list but I just couldn't stretch to the extra £10k needed for a good example over the supersport. Just a couple of questions, I already have a good buyers guide and all checks came up fine, however there where a couple of things on my mind. Firstly on the V5 log book the model is simply Porsche 911 coupe with no mention of supersport It should have a G50 box but I have read these were fitted from 1987 onwards and this one is older. Although there was no smoke it did smell a bit oily, maybe its an old car thing!

Thanks in advance chaps

If my memory serves well, the G50 was introduced August 1986 (1987 model year) G50 has reverse gear opposite 1st gear in H pattern with hydraulic clutch. 915 has reverse opposite 5th with cable actuated clutch.

Thanks guys, I got a proper HPI done through a mate who is in the trade, and it came up fine, no issues, again the model is coupe, is this ok? after all supersport was just an option on the 911 coupe so not a model in itself. As for the oil as its an old car I would expect a small leak

Hi Congratulations. There will be an comprehensive article in Porsche Post withinn the next few months on Supersports or as the factory call them Turbo-look. I have spent the last 5 yrs researching and the Editor has the finished article ready for publication. You will find nothing in log book but you should find under the bonnet the original option details and the designation M491 (also this should tie up with the original handbook which carries the same factory sheet as under the bonnet). This will confirm an original factory Wide-body variant. Geoff is absolutely correct G50 5 speed box started Aug 86 (87 model year) if not its the earlier four speed 915 box However I have a database of almost every 3.2 wide body and could check if its a "known vehicle" if I had the full chassis number. But dont put it on here, rather e-mail me as this would be far more secure. Simon

I was going to say they are both 5 speed G50 and non, well first the good news the car has had a rebuilt box and was uprated using G50 bits, now the bad news looks like the deal might not go through, out of interest am I paying to much? PS have a white supersport with 97k for £17k and the one Im intrested in is more money and higher miles, are these cars really going to be more then £20k in the not to distant future?

Condition condition condition. There were around 25 RHD M491 produced each year. They are rare ! I have turned down 2 offers for my car both on or about £25k. I have prooved to the insurers (by comparables) and now have an agreed value of £30k. But any car is only worth what someone will pay ! Mine is totally original very low mileage, absolutely mint and one of the last 3.2 chassis numbers identified, I know of quite a few Supersports sold at between £22k and £26k so your price seems very reasonable for a "tidy" example Simon

915 box rebuilt / uprated using G50 parts? I believe this is impossible, they are completely different units. If the seller is telling you this, then RUN AWAY!!

Agreed, if owner is telling porkies (sorry about pun), give it a wide berth. What else is the owner being economical with the truth about? And don't buy one of these cars without an expert inspection report.

HPI will only tell you the cars history ie owners .accidents .outstanding finance etc not the service history which is the important bit ,unless you have all this walk away IMHO

PS have a white supersport with 97k for £17k and the one Im intrested in is more money and higher miles, are these cars really going to be more then £20k in the not to distant future? If PS is who I think it is, have the car INDEPENDENTLY checked by someone who knows what he's looking at and not by anyone remotely associated with the seller - who is a dealer, after all. I'll say no more other than I have a SuperSport I purchased from someone with the same initials - and not without its problems!
