Quick one - does the wiper motor have gears in?

Driver's side wiper is making noises from the motor. It's a clicking noise, about 5 clicks each time it sweeps right-left. There's no noises when it reverses. I lifted the arm and the clicking stops, so I am guessing that the added pressure of shifting the arm across the windscreen is increasing resistance and making it jump gears or something.

I presume that this means a new motor (and may as well get the passenger side motor done whilst I'm at it as that's making a faint groan).

When I first noticed the clicking (about a week ago) I thought it might be a relay, it's that sort of click, but a quick look under the bonnet whilst it was going located it to the motor.

I haven't checked. I couldn't see the link though I wasn't checking that hard once I'd ascertained it was the motor and not the relay. it could be, I'll check later. It started after I put a windscreen wiper on upside down. I didn't think it mattered as it sweeps both ways but it made a terrible scratching noise until I put it the right way up and it's clicked since then, just got worse.

Given that it stops if you lift the arm, combined with the previous problem of the blade being on upside down, would lead me to believe that the problem is with the blade. Maybe it got damaged when it was run upside down. Do you have another blade, even the old one, that you could try to see if the noise disappears?

Failing the blade being the cause, it's possible that the links (under the bonnet) are catching on something or the arms loose - but either of these would be a real concidence to have occured at the same time as you changed the blade.

Kind regards
Anton

I pulled the flap that protects the motor up, but couldn't see any linkages moving. Where are they? The wipers were definitely going.
