"A motorist has been caught doing 172mph on a rural A-road, police said today.
Tim Brady, 33, was apparently clocked by a Pc's speed gun on a bridge over the A420 near Abingdon, Oxfordshire.
If convicted, he would become Britain's fastest speeder in a car. The current record is 156mph.
Brady notched up his alleged chart-topping speed in a £98,000 3.6-litre Porsche 911 Turbo on Saturday.
He allegedly borrowed the car from work without bosses' authority.
Until he resigned, he worked for car lease firm Helphire at its Abingdon branch.
A company spokeswoman said: "Tim Brady was an employee until Monday morning when he handed in his resignation.
"He borrowed the Porsche 911 Turbo without permission - he jumped before he was pushed."
Brady has been released on bail to reappear at Oxford police station on February 17, police said.
In 2003, car dealer Jason McAllister was caught doing 156mph in his BMW M3 3.2litre in Scotland. He was jailed for five months. "

Wow, but how fast could he have gone in my '88 Lux????

Seriously though. I had a quick run in with a 3.6 911turbo last night (a black one on the A43 toward Towester) and it showed how quick they really are. He had his girlfriend in the car and was being very sensible but a quick poke on the throttle was enough to demonstrate how easily it would pull away from my car. I used full throttle at 5000rpm in 2nd and he made me feel like I wasn't moving! Just blipped the throttle and effortlessly glided away.. Lucky B*****d.

911 turbo's are awsome cars. A work collegue has a 996 X51 and I went to a Donington track day with him. He wasn't pushing it throught the corners due to him not wanting to get too familiar with the armco, but when he floored it on the straights it just seemed to accellarate much faster than anything i've ever seen. It just dissapears over the horizon as if you are stood still. Unfortunately I didn't get a ride in it.

I know that stretch of the A420 and not only does it illustrate this Brady bloke is a lunatic but just how rapid that car is! Wish I had one!

Jails so full that security at my local Mags Court cells were stuck there until 10pm last Monday as there was nowhere for the customers to go! John Reid has reminded all Courts that jails are to be used only for dangerous or violent criminals and in this mad GATSO world, what could be more dangerous than a speeding Porsche driver? [;)] Mind you, that sort of speed on an A road is more than taking the mickey, even in a Turbo...

I'm more surprised that the previous " record " was only 156 mph?

from another forum I use

"Just saw on the news about a chap getting caught by talivan on a bridge driving at an alleged 172 mph in a Porsche Turbo. So expect in tomorrows daily press, manic, speed, kills blah, blah, blah. But a couple of points which I shall repeat tomorrow to my work colleagues, is that firstly these guns are not reliable and this is a proven fact. Expert operators know how to enhance readings and it would certainly need an expert to 'shoot' something going that fast, perhaps they are in training for the Olympic shooting team! Other points to make, is what were the prevailing road and traffic conditions at the time, certainly the car is up for it and did the chap actually do anybody any harm? This is all about what COULD happen, just like all the offensive weapons I keep in my kitchen knife draw, that I COULD go out and stab somebody with! Where ever you live, you will read about terrible mindless acts of violence inflicted upon perfectly innocent victims, where people have only the medical profession to thank, for saving their sight or long term injuries. Once caught these people will get nowhere near the punishment that this chap is going to get."

^^^ Top response that! Don't know where you got it from but the man talks sense. Plus if the road is big and wide enough to have a bridge over it then its not exactly a country lane!

Plus lets not forget the speeds that huge numbers of people do on the trip to and from Le mans on even smaller roads! It happens every year and I've never even seen a crash never mind a fatality. I've been passed like I was standing still when I was doing near 130mph on an N road! If you've got the car and the visibility then why is it 'dangerous lunacy'?

To be fair I think sending someone to jail for doing 156mph is ridiculous!! Just shows how stupid this country has become. It makes me so angry! I could rant on forever on this topic but will stop now

Hi Ben,

Its a terrible state of affairs isn't it, all this country seems to do is punish the law abiding public severely for "small" offenses. Whereas career criminals with intent get a slap on the wrists and suspended sentences.

What really gets on my tits is the DVLA advert on television which states that they know when you are using your car without car tax. Yet they can't keep track of criminals which have gone AWOL from open prisons or suspected terror suspects missing from deportation facilities....

they don't know when you are using your car without car tax... they just made it an offence not to tell them that you weren't using it!

The only bit they miss out from that advert is "BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU", really is shocking to hear in this day and age.

Have you heard the London Congestion Charge ad with the 'groovy' music, trying to kid you that it is trendy to have to pay to drive on roads that we already paid for in the first place.

Irresponsible as it may be, it gives me a warm feeling to know that it was a Porsche the guy was driving! How long before the BMW brigade try to take our trophy?

Haha I like that... shouldn't laugh though I suppose!

Seeing how 911 turbo's accellarate I can believe that the new 997 is capable of getting upto those sorts of speeds very very quickly over a relatively short distance so I believe that this is entirely possible on a country lane. I'm not sure of how many other makes of sportscars could achive those speeds in such a short distance. I watched a programme on VMax sessions and the Ferraris and other exotica fell well short of the manufacturers top speeds whereas the 911's pretty much all achieved very close to their manufacturers claimed top speeds. I can't imagine a BMW taking the Porsche crown, but i'm sure there are many Burberry cap clad chavs having a go even as we speak. I'm just waiting for Paul to have a go in his 3.2ltr monster. Given it is developing close to the torque of a 911 turbo he should be able to give it a good go!

The section of the A420 in question is a reasonably long stretch of dual carriageway, fairly straight (although gradual kinks turn into serious bends at that speed), is lightly trafficked and as devoid of pedestrian hazards etc. as your average motorway. You really have to wonder about the accuracy of some of the reporting. With half the country reading The Sun and the other half watching Big Brother is it any wonder Britain is in the state it's in. (Not a rant - honest!)

Justin.
