R10 Concours '“ Members'™ Poll

For the last two years this has been held at OPC Silverstone, on our usual August Monthly Meeting date. This year, through OPC Silverstone, we have been offered an opportunity to stage the Concours at the RLS Polo Club in Southam, about 10 miles West of Daventry. (This is not to be confused with the Porsche Polo Event being organised in June by Cotswold Region.)

The advantages of this are (a) a new venue; (b) a backdrop of a polo match and associated activities ( & catering?) "" something to do whilst waiting for the results of the judging to be collated; and (c) continued sponsorship by the OPC.

The obvious disadvantages I can see are (a) its location is on the NW fringe of the region at best (- though there are facilities for valeting the car once you get there); (b) not a car-focussed location; and (c) we may have a limited choice of dates to go for "" likely to be a Saturday in early August.

Before I consider progressing discussions with the owner of the Club grounds, can I please request your views on the appropriateness of this or otherwise?

Secondly, is there anyone in the Region who has time to get involved in this and perhaps visit the venue to evaluate it?

I will happily take on the challenge as I am sure I can get messrs Jones, Darnell et al to help me out.

Mike - if you mail me the details I will happily check out the venue etc.

Suppose Daventry is a bit far to cycle too on a Saturday morning ?[:)]

I know the place, it's on the Leamington Road, about two miles out of Southam. That road is pretty clean, no building sites or 'mud on road' signs along there. Easy route for you MK guys up the A5 to Weedon, round Daventry, towards Southam and on towards Leamington, about 45/50 mins from Stony Stratford roundabout, or maybe 35 from J16 of the M1.

It looks OK from the road but the OPC would be a far better location for car anoraks and MK/Northants residents if you can get it IMO. Don't know what facilities they have at the Pony Club for car washing, or how much hard standing they have available. Will stand on the bonnet and take some spy shots next time I am over that way, which seems to be often enough at the minute.

Actually come to think of it I am out at 4x4 Tyres Direct in Southam in the next week or so, can check it out fully then (if Graham hasn't already done so).

They have a good website - ok yah?

John

The OPC has suggested this change but has not ruled out their premises - this was a suggestion to give members more to do whilst the votes are counted (a problem in each of the last 2 years - though vastly improved by Andy's IT).
The initial discussions with the owner indicate that there is a water supply AND electric points (if you want to bring polishers, driers, etc). Not sure if you could set up a jet-wash. Need to look at site.

I am being asked for our decision in the next week or so, and to go for a particular date. If we do go for this, I would suggest we change the Monthly Meeting date to Saturday 13th August (a day early).

Good to see the offers of help on this - thanks Graham. John, if we go ahead are you able to help out too?

Sorry Mike, I think I am in the States for three weeks in August starting around the 4th sometime. Can help with the run-up to the event though if you want anything done.

I have no particular problem with a different location but if I/we are to use the same formula/IT process as last year then I would need to know I have somewhere for the equipment that was safe and secure.

The kit I use is not my own but the companies so I need to know its safe.

At Silverstone its pretty much only PCGB people with no passers by so I have been comfortable with the kit in the space it has been. At an essentially puplic event I will need better.

Perhaps the Region 10 Mountain Bike Display team could put on a show to entertain the crowds while the results are being fiddled... I mean worked out. [:)]

Cheers

Andy

I'll book the St. John's Ambulance now then [8D]

I am in Coventry on Saturday for our post xmas party. I will call into the Polo club on the way and see what it looks like, check for hard standings, hot and cold running water etc.

I will also gladly help out with the organisation of the event as required.

A very good friend of mine lives there - there are some cracking routes - so I'm told. Want to organise ?? Happy to do so

Graham, just FYI I have someone looking into your M5 thing but they agree a year sounds about right, will let you know if I hear any more. VERY limited production run apparently.
