For those that don't get the newsletter (sign up for it), these are the options. We have tried to find somewhere nice to have dinner and looked at some high quality places hence some of the prices.

Option1: The Talbot Hotel Malton (James Martin's does the menu)
Dinner, B & B comes in at £199 per room, dinner only will be around £40 per head, both plus drinks.

Option 2: The Black Swan Helsmley.
B & B comes in at a preferential rate of £174 ([&:]) per room plus dinner at £40.50 per head plus drinks.

Option 3: Hazlewood Castle
B & B comes in at £99 per room plus dinner at around £40-£45 per head plus drinks.

Option 4: Non of the above.

Re the October newsletter:

Talbot in Malton sounds good, though a little far off if the weather is poor. Food should be good. I know the place but can't remember parking capacity.

Black Swan sounds expensive, perhaps because of the address. I'm sure you've negotiated well but £174 b&b is plenty. Food and hospitality should be good. Same comment as above if the weather is poor. Parking?

Hazlewood Castle is very well located just off the A1(M), well priced, plenty of parking. Only ever eaten breakfast there, so can't comment on their dinner. Very good for Rob & Liz!

Regards, Paul.

Thanks, Mark and Carol, for exploring the options (and Paul for starting the thread!). Our first choice would be Hazlewood Castle, mainly due to location. Other 2 venues joint 3rd place. Mike & Lisa

We did laugh at the Black Swan pricing, but having gone to the trouble of asking it seemed rude not to include it [:D] The other two come out at about the same price with I suspect the Talbot probably being the better quality one but it is a little way out. The Hazlewood should be accessible whatever the weather.

Eaten at all three ( though not stayed ). Talbot would be the best dining room I think - there is good car parking which is not visible from road. Andrew.

Looks like Hazlewood castle to us. The prices of the rooms at the other two are a bit ott to say the least. Even £40-45 for an evening meal seems expensive or am I being tight and out of touch with prices? Chris

Last year we paid £27 per head for dinner so yes this is more expensive, but it should be loads better and this day in age I don't think it is excessive. This is why we didn't just book it, we want to get people's thoughts. If the majority want something less then we can do that. In the previous years when we did a restaurant in York, we paid about £23 per head for food and the last time we managed to get a deal at about £80 per room in the hotel. We didn't want to stick to the same thing every year, but clearly once we move away from what we know it gets harder to find somewhere that you know is going to be good, or are able to negotiate better rates.

Black Swan although supposed to be very good is a bit too expensive for BB alone!! Hazelwood Castle, has a few poor reports on Trip Advisor, seems to be a wedding venue, used to run medieval banquets years ago when we last visited. Talbot Hotel recently fully refurbished, small and intimate with a good reputation for food, would be our choice of the three, but happy to go with majority.

Hazlewood Castle for us please. B&B sounds reasonable and the meal is priced same as everywhere else for Christmas. Just hope you don't choose the weekend that I'm working (18th/19th Jan)

I don't know where the Black Swan are coming from with their preferential BB rate of £174 for BB?? If you look on Booking.com you can book the Black Swan for Dinner, Bed & Breakfast for £198 on any weekend in January 2014 except the 4th & 5th.

As Mr.Chappell rightly comments, where do these venues warrant £45 per head for an evening meal in January - it's not like it's Christmas which is the busiest time. Can't we do a deal and scrap the crackers and hats and thus reducing the price to £25 per head? You can come to mine and sleep in the log cabin for £100 all in (although I won't be doing the cooking, it'll be a Tesco meal deal!) John
