RAC Assistance & Warranty Question

Hi all, I have a Boxster S MY2001 which is now about 8yrs old and going well (so far so good). My first Porsche and thoroughly enjoying...
I'm after a bit of advice on two parts (probably should have split it into 2 posts but hey...)

1) Warranty
At the moment I'm out of Warranty (was just a basic 6 month one from the Independent I got the car from) - with the car being 8yrs old I don't think many warranties will cover? Also the cost of the car whilst not cheap is not what it would be from new...what's the thoughts on looking to get some kind of warranty cover or is the best bet just to keep up the servicing and preventative maintenance?

2) RAC/AA Road cover
I've trawled around and seen a few posts mentioning low loaders etc... At the moment I have RAC roadside cover - in people's opinion is this adequate enough in the event I'd have to be 'towed'? Anyone know if they would send a low loader automatically?

Any advice much appreciated.

re 2 - in my experience, they never send a low loader automatically .. they always send a van and he plays around a bit .. gives up and then orders a low loader

last time Sue blew a tyre on the Boxster was a winters evening .. little country road middle of no where .. it was shredded .. Porsche Assist (AKA RAC) sent a man in a van to "help her put the gunk in".. even though she explained it was worthless as the tyre wall was too badly damaged.. he took one look called for a low loader which he was told over 2 hours .. he kindly took Sue home so she could pick up the Cayenne and then she went back to the Boxster and waited for the pickup .. I was in California at the time so could do nothing to help

I extended the warranty on my 2006 Boxster and it is due up on May 09 .One of the reasons behind it apart from the possibility of mechanical failures was that if I have a puncture I would get them to take me to a garage get the thing fixed and save having to put the gunk in and then have to scrap the tyre which you are looking at approx £150 to replace .I do not think I will renew it next year as the cost is now outrageous with having to get the 111 point check done, have come across this company and asked for a QT and was approx £500 and if you read there policy there appears to be very little exclusions www.warrantywise.co.uk 0800 169 7880

My Boxster S is a 2000 and I know I am asking for trouble but it has never put a foot wrong or missed a beat. I do ensure that servicing is done every year on it's birthday, wether it has done the miles or not. I do not have any of the various warranty cover schemes in operation and based on my experience to date it would have been a bad investment.

The big Boxster failure is the RMS and if it was going to go would have done so by now. I know that if anything does happen it will be an expensive fix - probably disproportiantely so compared to the price you paid for the car, but bear in mind the quality of the components and the reputation for reliability that the car has. Personally I would get to know the local independent service operation and invest in keeping up the maintenance

Hi - thanks everyone for the advice and replies. I think I'm going to go with the preventative maintenance option with and Indy. Cheers.

RMS was 5-600 quid (mine done just inside the warranty). Agreed on the price of the warranty - I opted for Tesco, 420 pounds or therabouts and offered the same type of cover.

I'm not sure whether the RMS replacement (it is a redesigned part apparently) has done the job yet due to the weather - was only replaced about a month or so ago. Seems to be that as long as you keep an eye on it you should be ok time wise to get it sorted.

Tesco run three levels of warranty insurance cover, the premium one (about £420 yr for a Boxster) covers virtually everything, right up to engine failures, but i think is limited to cars up to 6 years old. The next level down has a decent amount of cover (£5k from recollection) and is about £360 per year.

Independent service and warranty plans are fine but often you need to have a major service completed first to qualify.

sorry for the late reply and you may have already purchased a warranty. I've used warranty works www.warrantyworks.co.uk for the past two years and have had no problems getting repairs covered, mainly due to the help of my local indy and club member George McMillan. Costs around £300 and for a car 8yo you should get their top cover, Platinum i think, which should cover most eventualities. Hope this helps.

Geoff
