RAC Battery Caution

Just a quick note.....

By default had to call RAC out to my newly acquired Jag X-Type <<<long story>>> the previous owner had tried to jump start with the terminals incorrectly connected....RAC man did his battery test and informed me battery "fried" fair enough, to get it going I had removed my battery from 993 Bosch Silver 18 months old, however, (very similar spec battery to Jag). Unfortunately the Certek had been inadvertently switched off and was flat, I thought might as well get the nice RAC man to test the Bosch again he reported battery was un-serviceable etc etc...

However, i bench charged the Bosch 24 hrs....battery is good as new no issues with subsequent starts or operations....and has been on the Certek and all is well !!!

This brought in to question, is the default answer by RAC .... battery is U/S???

On both occasions...he had the correct battery available and could fit it? obviously at an inflated cost!!!

They get their batteries from unipart and then stick on RAC stickers.....I see the vans all the time at my local unipart!!!!

It is also a 'quick fix' for him.

In days gone by you used to be able to trust RAC and AA patrolmen, especially if you were a member. Now it appears that they have quotas to meet and some are somewhat unscrupulous.

Cheers,

You are bang on Chris, You cannot test a flat battery ,I never write a battery off until i have tried to charge it for at least 24 hours and then its good practice to leave it for another day static before you test it, if you have the time. Quite often i say to the customer if time is short, borrow this battery whilst i charge and test yours, and then take it from there depending on the results and other factors such as the age of the battery.

Christian...........
