Race car 2.7 RMS (rear main oil seal)

All,
Some technical help on this sought. Having just finished a re-build on the engine on the 2.7 race car I was out at Castle Combe this last weekend. The car had been run up on a rolling road and everything seemed great. On track during qualifying it was going fabulously and after 3 or 4 laps to bed tyres, brakes and new engine down I was looking forward to getting in amongst the leaders.... then disaster. The car filled with smoke and I was forced to stop. All temps and pressures thankfully ok at that point but in the pits I was told it was spewing oil. Oops....

Back in service we set about finding the source of the leak and after exhaust, drive shafts, gearbox, clutch and flywheel came off... Lo and behold the much beloved RMS had POPPED OUT. Has anyone experienced this?

The team had been supplied by their main dealer with a "997" coded part, presumably to cure the drip we know so much about. They were a little surprised there was no "spring" in it as there had been in the earlier seal but they said it fitted fine. Oddly though, when we considered simply driving it back home and reassembling the unit so I could get back out on track it fitted back into the crankcase quite loosely. With no access to another seal that was my day run.

Why might it have popped out? Should this even be possible? Is there meant to be a spring? Any tricks to fitting a new one that might stop this happening again?! Any help gratefully accepted from the more technically adept!!!!

Cheers,
Marcus

I've never heard of one popping out before. There is a special tool to press the new PTFE seal in to the correct depth. The instructions are quite specific about the use of the green supporting sleeve too. If you would like a copy, send me an email and I'll attach it to a reply.

The seal is a dust seal, not an oil seal, by design anyway - it shouldn't be under any internal pressure as such.

For a car thats used for racing i'm surprised you haven't fitted the racing RMS seal.
