Race car for sale!

Would have been very tempting before I paid up half the cost towards the shell prep. That car will be worth a fair amount in parts and there in lies the rub with race turbos, not much use to me as a complete car because I don't know what I could run it in (also no idea about the car, could be bargain of the century stuff who knows). TBH if I didn't already have an S2 in fresh mechanical condition as a donor I would most certainly have looked at buying a ready made 968 racer, you would need about 14 grand but after Donnington on Saturday the 968 seems to be the way to go in PCGB racing. The other thing of course is that I am keeping everything I need to keep the car road legal so I could either run it as a track day tool or sell in the future in either guise. Most likely outcome is I will keep the car long term so after the pain of constantly fixing my 968 a known quantity is extremely valuable to me (968 is broke again, 4 times in 3 months now that car has let me down).

If I had the space and the money I would be tempted for a punt but buying racing cars is a risky business if you don't know the car. I have seen some outrageous dogs which most of us would end up rebuilding because the standard of preparation would annoy us so much.

There is no denying there are some bargains to be had and buying a finished car is often a much cheaper way of getter to the grid than starting from scratch. Even more so if you can get a car which has competed in a series you want to sign up to. You can then address issues as they break (or get broken for you) rather than get bogged down in getting all of the best stuff straight away.

A second hand racing car will seldom, if ever, be at a price comparable to the sum of the parts - the question is how much life is left in those parts?

Neil.
Was that you in the "cream / oatmeal" coloured zip up on Saturday.??? I saw you milling about the " orange" one.. Didnt know it was you..
I was the tall chap helping Paul out on the spanners...Well underneath anyway...[;)][;)][;)]

Er I think I have been rumbled [:D][:D]

Yes I was there with my brother, similar height more heavy build and rounder looking shades/glasses. ISTR I was wearing an oatmeal pullover and jeans and talking all the time and spying on everyone's cars [:D]. I got chatting to Riverside for a fairly long time because I recognised him from our 944 Bedford track day a couple of years back but haven't seen him since.
It was a good day all round although unlucky for the 2 968's you guys had there.

Biggest concern for me John would be the history of the shell etc, hence why I am having a freshly built one based on a totally straight rot free donor. Some race cars have been stuffed hard, some several times. I don't know anything about that car so it could be a real find, certainly wouldn't put anyone off, but for me personally I would want to find out in detail what the cars race history has been the past few years. The market for a car like that though seems a tad limited to me, something done to PCGB main championship spec has much more appeal which I guess is reflected in the prices asked. A good 968 of such spec is around £14K+ and S2 from about £10Kish, the one EMC have for example is £11.5K.

Actually this brings me onto a point that for me stood out on Saturday, everyone has been doom and gloom with the crunch but the turn out for the championship looked really good all things considered. I think this just shows that the PCGB race series is both strong and fairly desirable, OK one class in particular had a lot of entries but still a good spread of cars on the grid.

Depending on what this guy's reserve is, the deal reads well. I agree that you'd want to have a good look at it first, but even if it goes for double the starting price, the parts list would be worth more than that. Triple even.

That looks like one of Kevins cages in that car.. but I'm not aware of him ever building a turbo race car. That said I'm sure kevein has sold shells to people who have done "other things" to their cars.
