Hi All,
We finally managed to get the 986 3.2S on the track at Snetterton this weekend.
We'd not tested (mistake) because on the day before the test day, we found out the trailer (which we'd bought 10 years ago for 944S2) wasn't wide enough to get the car on. So mad dash to buy new trailer before the season opener.
So the car had only be driven on the trailer and off the trailer by the time race day started.
We got it to scruitineering ok, and it sailed thru no problems, but on the way to the track holding area and noise testing the gear-lever went floppy.
It was obvious the car could only select 3rd and 4th. With no time for repairs Tom qualified it (3 laps) in 3rd/4th, then I jumped in and did 3 laps likewise.
So back of the grid it was.
Back in paddock we found the gear selector cable had come off the control arm at the gearbox end. We offered it back up and clicked it into place...fine.
So it must have been, "not quite home", when they replaced the gear-box after changing the clutch and flywheel at the race preparation engineering works.....
So starting at the back I expected Tom to come flying thru some of the slower cars we should beat easily when the lights went out.... No I was dismayed to see him loosing ground on the field each lap.
After 20 mins we threw the "IN TJ" board out and he came in I was ready to jump in. The pit changeover worked fine but it was obvious as I left the pit-lane the problem was total lack of power.
The car had no acceleration and hesitated badly at 4000-5000 RPM.
Once over 5000 RPM it started to come on strong.
What can that be? It feels like ignition timing? Or is there something else?
We need help. Rolling Road? Or static timing?
We DNF'd becasue although I drove round the problem for 18 minutes, I eventually ran out of fuel 2 minutes before the end of the race.
Any suggestions welcome.
Gerry
