Raceprep help from 3.2 owners..

I was wondering if I could ask you guys for some help. I'm having a 1973 RSR replica car built up for the Cannonball 8000 Rally across Europe in September (more details at www.myrsr.com ). It's based around a fairly tired 1986 Carrera 3.2, and currently has had no changes to the drive mechanics other than a Wevo short shift kit. I'm picking it up from Mark at RS-911 about 2 weeks before the rally, and I'm going to take it straight to Jaz or JZM etc (not sure yet) to sort out a few things and I was wondering if you could think of anything else I could get done at the same time. I'm looking to a) improve the handling b) ensure reliability on the long rally.

Here is the list so far:
Bilstein shocks all round
Poly bushes
Turbo tie rods
Reduce ride height (stock at the moment)
Replace the clutch (currently juddery)
Maybe cut some mass off the flywheel
Replace wheel bearings (I've got 9" and 11" wheels now)
Tracking & Geometry & wheel balance

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The only thing that springs to mind is the rear anti roll bar mounts. These have a habit of snapping off although my cars still have the originals. WEVO make some replacements that can be welded onto the shell.
It would be annoying if the stock ones snapped off. I think you mentioned your car was once rusty.

Hi Ashley, good luck with the rally. With regrards the clutch, I had a bit of work done on the clutch throw arm/fork, instead of the rather pathetic roller bearings (they had collapsed) I replaced them with a pair of phosphur bronze bushings, these made the gear change rather sweet. I got the idea from Pelican parts, they do an upgrade kit, but I know a good engineer and he made them bespoke for me. They really do help.
Best of luck

As addition I have attached a photo of my clutch shaft for info, hope this helps.

Hi Ashley, agree with all of the above, not sure I'd go poly bushes I think you'll find they will wear out very quickly. Personally junk the quick shift. The 915 gearboxes are not the strongest and potentially forcing the shift will chip the dog teeth and knacker the synchros. Use a standard shift with all new bushes, more than adequate for the job. New torsion bars are a must and get them to corner weight the car as well. Two most important things to add to your list. Good luck, Graeme

With regards suspension, I have HD Bilstein shocks all round, Turbo (26mm) torsion bars at the back, rear anti roll bar off a late 3.2 (22mm from memory) and front ant roll bar of a late 3.3 turbo. All built up with good standard bushes. I also have 7 and 9 inch fuchs, turbo tie rods and lowered all round. It looks goad and handles very well.
The only change I might nake is to use elephant racing A-arm bushes when the present ones finally need replacing

|My gearbox is a rebuilt 915 with short shift and Seine gate shift conversion with Swepco dear oil. Agreed, it is slow and occasionally baulkes, but at least the throw distance is less.
