Raceretro - anyone make it?

By Eoin Sloan
I was another disappointed non-attender - not because I forgot - but because PCGB had its workers seminar and AGM the same W/E. I was the more fed up as this is the first year I have missed and in particular the first year I havent driven or co-driven on the Slowlysideways special stage and had been given a slot for my rally car... I have had preliminary discussions within Porsche Club Motorsport Ltd and will have it on the agenda of our next board Meeting that 'Motorsport' should attend. I will also be lobbying the PCGB Board as Race Car Register Secty to see if it should not be a club presence. Can I get some measure of how keen people would be for a "club" presence.

Gets my support Eoin. I too was disappointed at having to miss the event because of the conference.

If you get invited to do the rally stage again can I sit in the nav seat? Can supply my own 'lid [8D]

Yes, the management and I both went on Saturday. Bumped into quite a few rally chums and gawped and prodded lots of other bits. Best stand was Philip Young's rally stand complete with kangaroo and Gordon Jarvis' London-Sydney Hunter.
Not much Porsche presence; lots else that filled 4 halls. Too cold to watch the live action and the bar beckoned.....[:D]
Thoroughly recommended day out

I had actually fixed free stand space for the club at Race retro BUT the only date the club could find for the AGM etc was the same W/E.... Interested that the two stands mentioned have been Philip Y's and London - Sydney.... The London - Sydney is combined with the London - Taj Mahal. Only 50 pre- 31.12.69 cars do the air leg from Delhi to Darwin and thence across Oz to Sydney. The rallies are identical as far as Delhi/Taj Mahal. I have a confirmed entry for my 1972 Citroen GS (OK its not out of Stuttgart but it is air cooled and they are excellent endurance rallycars) but I do hope some Porsches enter... its early yet - the rally is not until 2008...
Please help me assess the level of interest in PCGB being at Stoneleigh Race Retro next year either as the 'club' or as 'motorsport'. I am actively encouraging 'motorsport' to be more than just the race series. One idea is for us to 'book' a number of entries in something like the Rally of Paris (There were 200 entries 50 pre-74 and 150 'GT' which included Porsches from 356 to GT3 RS [YES WE HAD BOXSTERS, 928's, CAYMAN there was an Audi RS4 so a Cayenne Turbo would get in!]- about 50 Porsches in all plus the usual rif raf like a Ferrari 612's, Competiziones, Stradales, Scagliettis etc., 6 Lambos etc etc ask Johnnie McGirl if he enjoyed it!) We would run the trip there and back eg hotels etc and use the rally organiser's infrastructure for the rally itself. This year we had navigation from Paris to Magny Cours for regularity for the early cars (the GT's treat the circuits as track day time) and after o/n and a Gala Dinner in Beaune we 'did' Dijon-Prenois. Its a long weekend job. You can leave UK on Friday morning and be back in UK Sunday night late. Do I have support for something like this?
If I do it will be on the next Motorsport Board meeting agenda.. We will also look at trying a tarmac rally stage 'track day' and more off road for the Cayennes as was done at Gaydon...

I'm certain they'll be a fair number of people (including myself) up for a longer distance rally/regularity event organised by the club, particularly if it's:
a) directed at beginners
b) not hugely demanding on the cars (i.e. you're not going to need a support vehicle with spares)
c) not hugely expensive
d) porsche only (none of this french muck [;)][;)][;)])

Regarding Stoneleigh . . . always been surpised we haven't been there promoting the club and the race series.

RE: VC's post. We have just had this year's R de P the w/e before the AGM. However both Rallystory and Promauto run non-licence w/e rallies/raids (and of course longer ones as well) throughout the year [see mention below of PCF). I will post details of what we could do as I am incidentally sure that the 'motorsport' board will totally support this initiative as it does not in anyway intrude on the existing race series nor the personnel running that side. In fact by pre-empting the formal discussion I am going to have a feel for what I can say when I put it to the 'board'. There are other organisers but it is better to (1) Work around people I know (2) Since recent changes to road rally sport in France it is better to work with established French organisers of precisely this sort of event. I have not discounted by any means asking to piggy back on Porsche Club France events but if you look at this advance copy of the Race Car Register notes for PP May edition you will see why I suggest a mixed marque rally... IOf the 200 entries this year 17 were pre-1974 Porsches and 12 were '74 to "˜87 and a staggering 42 ran in the GT Classes making a total of 71 Porsche entries. The models represented included 356 , 911 2.0l -2.4l , 2.7 RS, 3.0RS, 911SC, 911 3.2 & Club Sport, 911 Turbo, 964, 964 RS, 924 Carrera GT, 928, 944, 944 Turbo & Turbo Cup, 968CS, 993 & Turbo, 996, 996 GT3 & GT3RS, 997, 997 GT3 & GT3RS, Boxter and Cayman. There were only 40 pre-74 cars but these included a genuine Le Mans entered 1954 Triumph TR2, several Lotus, De Tomaso Pantera, E Type, and of the French marques Renault Dauphine, Renault Alpine, Citroen SM and the Sloan/McGirl Citroen GS 1220. Of the later cars notable (for me at least as these things are very subjective) were the Ferrari Challenge Stradale, an F40, the 612 Scaglietti, the F599 GTB Fioranos (3 in number!), a seriously fast Mercedes SLK 55 AMG and a frightenly fast BMW M3 CSL. Lamborghini were represented by Diablo VT, Gallardo and Murcielago. Maserati were out in force with Gransport and MC Victory.. rarer were the Dodge Viper and France's own Venturi (a 300 Atlantique).
Lots of Porsches yes, but the combination of that lot under the Eiffel Tower with wall to wall sunshine was a petrolheads treat. And lunch at Cafe Kleber (with its distinctly good position for 'ornthology') was a pretty good start to my 4th R de P.
so action on me to post a list of possibles.
Cheers

PS: (1) I'd like comment on the tarmac rally track day (for all models) and off roading for Cayennes. (2) In the meantime I know we are using the Early 911 forum slot so maybe I'd better see if I can set something up for this subject - leave that with me.

Sorry me again... Can we move the rally discussions to the new thread on Club Motorsport/Rallying on the Continent etc
Cheers

PS I will monitor Early 911 for a few days in case anyone misses this cue.
