Radiator fan randomly cuts in

Hello all, a while since I posted. Still putting miles on the CGT and loving it.

Some advice please

The radiator fan cuts in after I have parked up. Normally it should do this if the engine is hot and until about 2 months ago it was doing that. A couple of times over the last two months I have come to start the car but the battery is very flat. I have tracked this down to the rad fan starting even when cold. Temporary solve is to remove earth strap on battery whilst parked. Hardly elegant.

i have looked at the circuit and see not only the regular temp. cut in switch but also the temperature time switch which I guess kept the fan running on a hot engine when I locked it up in the garage.

Before I go taking bits off the car has anyone else had a similar problem and can anyone recommend a fix?

For me the temp switch on the rad was faulty. Tapped it a few times and the fan would turn off. New switch cured it.

I wil just locate and swap standard temp switch - see if that cures the problem.

Today I have been trying to trace fuses and relays. No diagram I have found - usual Haynes and internet sources has anything close to what I am seeing in the passenger footwell.
I thought mine would be exactly like a 1981 Turbo. But the relays I pulled and fuses I removed didn't make any difference, the fan kept trundling.

Do you know of a source of model specific wiring diagrams?

Can't help with the wiring but just to reinfoce the opinion. I have/had exactly the same issue with my 944 T. Go to start, battery flat. I took the relay out and then forgot I had momentarily during the cold snap, which resulted in the temperature going up to about 3/4 hot, nowhere near the danger mark though. Interestingly the fans now cut out but do not go to half speed when the iginiton is off. I'll settle for that right now as it is supposed to be a real pain to fit a new switch, but I'll be damned if I'm going to drain the system unless I have to as I understand it is just as much of a pain to get rid of the reknowned airlock.
 
I reckon you are correct on replacing the switch. Probably meant to be done from below which means removing the undertray

I shall go back to locating the relay for that temporary fix.

Maybe wire in a simple circuit that allows me to manually switch fans on. That would appear to be an altogether simpler and more robust solution
 
Have you by any chance investgated the possibilty that the wiring diagram might be right at the back of chapter 13 in the Haynes. I ask this because there is one with the air con circuit so the CGT might use that. SOme models of 924T had air-con. The redoubtable Mr Ives has that option on his red 924 Turbo, I have seen the pipes.

As an update on my referenced post, I didn't have to drain the system, I put the new switch in immediately after unscrewing the old one. I did lose some coolant (about a pint) but didn't lose enough to get an airlock. Just topped up the reservoir after running up to temperature (and letting it cool down too). As jobs go, it was quicker to do than to think about before hand . . .
 
That was my secret plan Vince. Sometimes Clark's Garage is a bit thorough, but then with the American sue you syndrome I'm not suprised he double dots the I's and crosses the T's
