RADIATOR FANS

Both the radiater fans are staying on constantly on my 968, coming on as soon as I turn the ignition on and not gong off until the ignition is turned off. I have been told it will be iether the relay (tested and dont think it's that) or the thermostat. Does anyone have any experience of this. If it is the thermo where is it located and is it a big job/costly to replace (I know the part itself is only about £15).
Cheers.

Sounds like the thermostat in the rad. Classic symptoms. The thermostat is located in the top right hand corner of the rad as you look down on the engine from the front of the car. It screws into the back of the rad. It is simple to replace (drain rad, replace stat, refil rad and bleed) but on a 944 at least it is a real pain to get to. I tried but after an hour or so of trying to squeeze my clumsy hands into the space taking skin off my knuckles with every attempt I decided to whimp out and take the car into my specialist. He did it within the hour.

Sort of related but after I bought my 968 I realised that the cooling fans pulsed rather than running continuosly. They seemed to work OK in terms of cooling the engine but I eventually asked the garage to take a look. They found a resistor to be missing from the circuitry and reckoned from the look of things that it had been missing from the factory! One new resistor was fitted (cost very little) and the fans then ran as they should.

It did sound like the classic problem with the radiator temp/fan switch, did you manage to get it sorted.
