Radiator upgrade

Hi new to the club I own a 944 turbo that I've been restoring over the last few years I'm now doing the recommissioning jobs and would like to replace the radiator with a upgraded version has anyone got any advice ? thanks john

Why do you want to upgrade it? the original is more than adequate unless you have a serious power increase.

serious upgrade go for the oil cooler this how fit one on get oil cooler adaptor to fit with your oil filter then attach the pipes from that to the oil cooler see were best place to put the oil cooler.

imho there's no need to upgrade the radiator on the 944T ....you'd have to increase the power/heat by an awful amount to require more cooling

The plan is to end up at 350bhp I'm just about to buy a better turbo as the one on the car needs a refurb (oil seals) and at the minute the car runs fine but won't idle for long periods just chucks its coolant out of the overflow on the pressure cap I think there's a flow problem through the rad so if I'm going to change it I dont want to find out later I should have updated it instead of buying a stock item .

The head has been done and a up rated head gasket fitted the fans work on both speeds new thermostat

Normally I'd suggest a hg problem? Have you checked coolant for exhaust gases?

Can you feel cool spots on the rad?

Tried to measure the temp of the rad and it doesn't seem hot the temperature gauge isn't in the red when it's sick on the pavement (about 2/3 of the way up )doesn't use water on a normal run .can you elaborate on a hg problem thanks j

HG failures on 944's seem usually to be coolant/exhaust gas mixing - The increasing pressure in the coolant system eventually forcing coolant out of the expansion tank. I mentioned it as it's an easy thing to check and rule out. Just get a friendly MOT tester to use their hydrocarbon tester above the open cap of the expansion tank. You would expect it to use some on a run though.

The other thing I wondered about was water pump - a failed impellor?

If the rad is largely blocked & not cooling, I'd have thought you could feel temp differences on the rad - or a heat gun for about £7 off ebay

If hg, even slightly. You would get hard start up. Run on 3 or less then clear and run normal. Also I would expect Un seem water lost.

Have u rebleed the system when hot. Open the valve on the coolent neck, should get some steam released before water. Nip it back up and open header tank cap. level shouldn't rise. What level are you running the coolent at. Most find they like to burp them self's to just about the min mark.
