Radio aerial not extending

Guest

New member
Hi,

The previous owner of my 3.2 told me that when the new-ish radio/CD unit was fitted, the audio engineer didn't connect up the aerial. Apparently, the owner wasn't bothered about it as he said he didn't want to listen to the radio anyway......... Seems a little odd. However, I do want to listen to the aerial and so want it connected up!

Can anyone recommend a reputable audio engineer who could do this, or is it something I could actually do myself? I've not a clue about audio stuff, obviously. [&:]

Appreciate your advice!

Oh, although it says on my avatar, I'm in the Watford (Herts) area.

Sorry to hear of your erectile difficulties(!)

What year of 911 3.2 do you have?
If I recall correctly, post-86 models have a radio antenna and booster unit that is built into the windscreen.

It doesn't stop you using a normal, telescoping antenna, though.

Try JZ Machtec. They're near you, but it's not a difficult DIY job.

Hi Zia and thanks for the speedy reply and your sympathy at my problems getting it up! [&:]

It's an '84 and it's got the telescoping type of aerial on the offside wing - I'll give JZM a call this week but if you say it's not a difficult DIY job then I'll look into doing it myself first, thanks! I just assumed for some reason that anything electrical would be a tricky thing. It's about time I properly earned my spanner, anyway. "Too right," I hear Bones saying! [:)] If I can sort it on my own then I'll post again on how to do it.

As if I'd chastise any of my 'Porsche Buddies' John? Sounds odd that the aerial is connected for auto erect - oo er - Before you hand over any readies to JZ check pull out the radio/CD and hopefully the plug for the aeriel will be there somewhere. This will unit have to be removed anyway. If it's not visible there, shine a torch up under the wing and trace the aerial cable or maybe it's still cable tied up under there? From there it's a simple matter of finding a suitable grommet to thread it through into the underdash area.

All modern head units have a wire coming out, which is designed to connect to the aerial relay. 12v with the radio on, 0V with it off - simple.

OK, I understand car electrics, so t is for me.

The place I use for my ICE stuff is in Hangar Lane, so a bit far for you.

Strange, how no one has said how sad it is to have a 911 with a piece of wire sticking up from the front guard?
Plus, how does John C listen to his "aerial"?
Maybe a foxtail would improve things?
Or two blue lights?[]

Pray tell what is so sad about wanting to listen to decent quality radio reception whilst driving along ? It is, after all, just a car most of the time.

One was refering to the "clean body" line created by Ferry's son when he designed the 911 body!
Porsche wanted to keep this idea when they included the original aerial in the windscreen. Yes, it doesn't quite work as well as an external aerial, but?
Besides, unless its digital, for those of us who live outside of the that loverly city called London, its the way to go.
Anyroad, I play tapes... yes old fashioned tapes, recordings of digital radio, Planet Rock, and when I tire of them, I tape over them.

Ah, the original, pre SC/3.2 carrera era !

aerial in the windscreen
Which was always going to be crap - a very bad compromise.

DAB - another very bad compromise, unless you like MP3 compression et al.

I like good quality FM radio. I get good quality FM radio with an external aerial.

I have added a strutbrace, turbo track rod ends, 245 rear tyres, lowered suspension - gosh, why did not Mr. Porsche add these as normal ?

Get real - I drive a 1987 car as an everyday driver, with air-con, and decent radio.
I don't believe the idea of 'perfect as sold' - there was always a compromise.

Thanks Bones, John B, for your advice - I'll take a look behind the head unit one lunchtime this week and see if I can hook it up.
