I've not been in there myself, but that looks like it could be the aerial that has been snapped off of the previous screen. I suspect the new one should have had similar to plug in to the white connector.
Either that or it attaches to the screen aerial somehow.
Has your new screen got a fine wire aerial built in to it? It should have. Without going to check mine I think it runs up the centre of the screen (I can't remember!)

Non-PCM (Navigation) screens should have a single thin wire running down the centre of the screen as Mark states. Cars with Navigation should also have two extra 'diversity' aerials one either side of the screen. From what I can see on the photo your car does not have Navigation, if it does they have also fitted the wrong type of screen. Either way the wire should be attached to the replacement screen.
I know several members who have screens fitted incorrectly by a well known glass company; Most have had a second screen fitted under direct supervision of a dealer.
My last screen was fitted in USA and the insurance approved company wouldn't touch the screen so I had to go to a dealer to fit it, pay for it myself and then claim back the cost from the insurance company.
However, I am not sure that method is available with UK insurers, and I do not know if UK Porsche dealers actually fit screens.
Mark.Nick, thanks for the input, appreciated. The car does not have pcm/Nav, but the aerial element does run around from the centre of the screen, up and around to the bottom of the A-Pillar where it termainates at the base of the screen.Its at that I point I think its broken. It;s so tight that I just cant tell if whet's left is old or new.. either way, I think it's a new screen to solve the problem.
I have just read the relevant section in the 986 manual and removing the plastic cowl is the correct access, albeit the manual is lacking photos. I can't confirm it's location exactly as I am away from my own car at the moment. The 987 set-up is totally different with all the connections centrally mounted under the cowl.
Best I can suggest at the moment without replacing the screen is to connect a wire to the connector and run that behind the a-pillar as a temporary aerial.

Cheers Nick for the help, under the outside cowel I couldnt see anywhere to attach to. only the black sealant used to bond the screen down. Tried to use the visible wire vertically up the pillar, but it was unsuccessful... will try a windscreen replacement co next week, to see what they say. will post results
