Radio Antenna Connection Problem

Afternoon all,

Wonder if anyone can please assist with an issue I am having with the radio or rather antenna in my car (1990 964 C2)

It appears that the antenna in the front windscreen is not correctly connected up and thus provides we with nothing more than BBC Berkshire on a good day.

I have had it looked at by a car stereo place who informed me that they had checked the connection to the radio (which was fine apparently) and that the problem probably was the connection to the antenna in the screen. They also suggested I should take it to Porsche to get it fixed. So not very helpful!

Is there anyway I can check this myself or does it really require a trip to the big boys?

Thanks inadvance for your assistance!

Best Regards

Adam

Adam,

The most common cause of this is that the white wire which is attached to the main aerial feed wire to the radio is not connected properly. The white wire is the power feed to the signal amplifier which sits between the screen and the radio. It lurks just behind the clock on a RHD car. It should be attached to the radio's power aerial feed (i.e. a 12 volts supply FROM the radio which is intended to power an electric aerial.

If this is all connected OK it's possible you may have a problem with the connection to the screen itself. It's not uncommon for it not to get connected if the screen is replaced.

Thanks Dave for the super prompt reply. :)

To check the connection behind the clock do I do this by looking under the dash or by some how removing the clock it's self?

I had the windscreen replaced about 3 years ago but to be honest I can't recall is the radio was working before then or not!

If it turns out that things are connected behind the clock and it is the screen would I then need to get someone in to fix it?

Thanks again for your help it's much appreciated.

Adam,

You should be able to see the radio end of the white wire from under the dash. The wire is normally tied in with the aerial lead and the burning question is whether the white wire is terminated in the head unit or just flying about.

To get to the amplifier it's likely you WOULD have to remove the clock.

If the connections are OK the most likely problem is that the amplifier is duff. That means replacing it.

Regards

Dave
