Radio failure

Hi everyone, I was sat in the car listening to the radio with ignition off when there was a popping sound and then smoke and smell of burning coming from around the cup holder . Nothing working now , has anyone got an idea of what's happened? The car is a 996 turbo S . Cheers Tony .

When you say "nothing working now" I assume it is just the radio/PCM that isn't working. The popping and smoke makes it sound terminal to me. There is a fuse on the back of the radio/PCM, but I doubt it would produce a noticeable amount of smoke if it blows. Fuses 'age' so it might be worth changing it to see if it blows again. You have to pull the unit out to get to it, and if you can smell an acrid odour from inside the unit then it is probably (literally) toast.

Is it PCM or a CDR23? I would assume a PCM in a Turbo S, in which case you have to unclip the "horseshoe" surround, by gently prising up the bottom edges with a trim tool or butter knife. Then you will see a couple of 1/4 turn latches with allen key holes. Turn these, and it will release the unit.

If it is a CDR, you will need a pair of Becker/Ford removal keys, and push them in the slots at the bottom edge of the radio. You can get the keys from Halfords or eBay.
