Radio Ga Ga!

My otherwise original 944 has a horrible boy racer looking stereo and really want to change it. Does anyone know what type of radio went in a 1985 B reg 944, the one before the oval dash model was released.

Failing this if I have to get a new one can anyone suggest a nice one, which doesn't look like a disco in the dashboard?
Thanks as always

Ha - I know what you mean. They all seem to look either like a disco or use a microscopic font on the buttons that requires a magnying glass to read (probably showing my age!)

If anyones can suggest a good looking unit that can play MP3 disks I for one would be interested!

Even better would be a classy looking, no nonsense one with DAB radio and an Aux input! Anyone one know of one?
Ian, I'll let you know if I find good one that can play mp3 CD's (without the need for microscope accessories)

The best modern (but not modern-looking) head unit out there, to my knowledge, is a Becker Grand Prix"”it's what I bought for my '44. Looks lovely in the dashboard, the plastic doesn't even seem too shiny and new. This link should take you to it on their website. It tends to cost between £260 and £350 depending on where you buy it from. I picked one up brand-new on eBay for £269. An iPod connection kit lets you run an iPod through it and control from the head unit (my iPod is stowed away in the old cassette-box armrest)"”that connection kit costs another hundred quid, generally. The unit doesn't do DAB radio, but it does everything else you mentioned.

I have the original Blaupunkt model that came out of my 1984 model.
Perhaps we can do a deal on it - it worked when I took it out about 12 years ago.
Email me off forum if you are interested.

Cheers,

Our in-screen aerials don't work with DAB. You have to drill a hole in your roof to fit a bee-sting aerial 968 style and break up the smooth 944 lines.

I've got an Alpine MP3/CD stereo that you can plug your iPod into and will allow you to control your iPod from the head unit which isn't to disco-light ish. This means you can have your iPod hidden away out of view. Trying to select a track on an iPod whilst on the move is very distracting. The Alpine interface works very well once you get used to it.

I know exactly what you mean, I took out the blue disco lit Sony Xplod head unit that came with my 944S and replaced it with a JVC one that really suited the car but I've had to go back to it as I can't live without my mp3's and can't warrant the cost to change it. The radio now works as it should as well thanks to this forum, whoever wired it up connected the supply to the aerial booster to earth instead of the ignition +ve.

Im using a blaupunkt cd player which came out of a 2002 merc A-class, its just plain black and looks nothing fancy but does look like its supposed to be in there !!!

Hi, it's reassuring to know that I'm not the only one to have had issues with a good stereo. Would those of you who have been good enough to let me know which "anti-disco" stereo you have mind letting me know the model number please? That way I can have a look at them online.
Thanks as always,

Seconded.
I have a Mexico Pro which has the same shape and it looks like it was designed exactly for the oval dash.

I found this unit to be an excellent match.

High quality, high power, face off, MP3 and easy to use.

I also have one in my early dash model.

Pioneer DEH-P77

Not made anymore!

Halfords price £350 when they first came out.

I paid £237 from an internet company.

Have seen S/H on ebay going for about £100
