Radio Reception

In a way your post makes me feel better, Seb.I have a Panasonic CD/Radio and reception has never been brilliant.There was me thinking it was my being way out in the Suffolk boondocks.But perhaps its normal. Just have to switch off and listen to that engine. JohnC 993turbo

The reception on my Pioneer radio is particularly poor. The last radio wasnt great either and I have a feeling with the antenna in the windscreen, this has never been one of the good points of a 993.

Is this normal to have intermittent reception such as I do and can anything be done to resolve it?

Any suggestions appreciated as always.

I think there is a radio signal amplifier somewhere in the chain that quite often gets disconnected in the cars life - might be worth doing a search. Pioneer is non standard, so maybe someone has disconnected this inadvertantly in the past when changing head units? Reception in my car is fine rgds Pete

Like Pete, my reception is fine in 993 - indeed it's identical to that in my RAV4 (Standard OEM radio/CD with roof antenna). I say "identical" because one of my regular journeys is up the side of Loch Lomond and I gradually lose Radio 4 reception, get tired of the interference, and switch to listening to the CD or iPod at about the same location no matter which car I'm driving. 993 has a Becker.

Reception on my Becker used to be very good until I had a new screen fitted its now very poor. I've checked the connection to the screen behind the speedo and it appears OK although I've not taken the stereo out yet to check connections at the front end.

I only bought my 993 11 months ago, but so far the retro-fit JVC S6060 radio/cd has been excellent. Maybe the wiring gremlins have broken a wire to give you an intermitent connection. It also has some controls in the driver's door bin, don't know if they're standard. If they are, there's lots of wires running about just for a radio and lots of possible places for breaks. I live in a very poor radio reception area (even for units in the house), and while the 993 has a better signal than my wife's car, it's not perfect. I fitted a separate DAB unit with its own antenna, and apart from a few blackspots on the way to work I now get excellent reception. Cheers/John

My 993 has the Sony system which was an option when new, and it is very poor (my dads 993 turbo has the same system, and his too is rubbish). Luckily for me I prefer the exhaust sound to the radio.

Thank you all for your responses, some similar issues to mine and not others- interesting. Since I am not the most technically minded, I have no problem getting to the back of the stereo to check the connections, however, how do I access the connection from the screen behind the speedo? Pete you mention the amp getting disconnected or damaged - are you referring to the connection from the screen? Many thanks.

Yep, not sure where the actual amplifier is, but it connects between the screen aerial and the head unit. Heard quite a few tales of it either not being reconnected, or being damaged, when windscreens are replaced Pete

I had the same problem and I too have a Becker. Just been for service and the inde has checked everything and still has no idea. I get Radio 1 OK but the local stations are terrible.

I had the same problem and I too have a Becker. Just been for service and the inde has checked everything and still has no idea. I get Radio 1 OK but the local stations are terrible.

I have a Becker Indianapolis. When it was first installed it seemed fine but I was not up to spped with what it did and how. I found it always kept jumping to from one station to another, usually one that had a stronger signal. After reading the manual, something I only do as a last resort, I found that if I set the radio to manual tune, it stayed on the station I had selected, regardless and seems much better. Seems that when set to auto tune they do seem to jump from station to station for no apparent reason, except that the quality of one signal has dropped and another improved with the set selecting the strongest signal. Maybe not the answer to your problem, but just a thought. Michael
