Rain Tray

Hi,
I've got a bit of a beginners question! In the 'Engine' section on the 912 Registry site it says make sure you have a rain tray suspended below the grill. What exactly is a rain tray, what does it look like and if I don't have one where do I get hold of one?
Cheers

Fraser

Its a plastic tray which is suspended on 'stand offs' from underneath the grill on engine lid. It's basically to stop water getting onto the engine.
They are very hard to find. The bearings in the generator are usually the first thing to go if you dont have one. If your car is garaged then shouldn't be a problem. Did you mean 'our' 912 site btw?

Yeah, was having a look today. I guess I'm ok since my car is garaged - better make sure I don't take it out in the rain!

Here's a pic

I've been looking for one of these for ages... Hopefully, like buses, it would be great if two came along.

Does anyone have one - with the stand offs?

This may seem an odd question, but why do 912s require the tray, and 911s not ? And don't they affect the cooling ?

I know that they are different engines, but do they not have the cooling shroud over the engine, as 911 ? I assume that this keeps the rain off mine.

912 are a bit of a hole in my knowledge, I must admit, and not because of any perceived status, just because.

John, hopefully you can see in this pic how 'exposed' things are compared to a 911 engine, especially the generator...

also... they don't offer much in the way of resitance to the cooling intake as they are on 8cm or so legs or stand-offs and they have lots of cunning holes, they are almost a work of sculptural genius [;)]

Hello Helen have you just bought a 912 [;)]

I just got my rain tray today and I have to make some of those 8cm bolt things

The rain tray does apparently make the motor run slightly hotter. However in this country shouldn't be too much of a problem...

Right, got me a rain tray - now just need to work out how to attach it! Anyone got any tips? What do I need and what should I already have in place on the car?

Fraser

It should have come with aluminium hexagonal 'stand offs'. Normally 6, they are about 8cm long and you use the screw them onto the bolts that hold on the grill.

First take of the appropriate nuts from underneath the grill, screw on the stand off to each of the six, then affix the rain tray using the nuts to suspend the tray.

Basically the stand offs act like bolt extensions.

If you have not got the stand offs then your options are to make some, or find some.
