I'd like to try my hand at a bit of rear wheel steering on some loose surface to enhance a bit of car control. Has anyone been on a rally driving day, Red Letter day or similar, I'd be interested in hearing your reports on the session or what you would or would'nt recommend.

I don't know where you are based but last year in R3 region we organised a skid handling day which was held in northumberland. The guy has a car which has been modified so that it can replicate all sorts of skids and road conditions.
The day was really enjoyable and very reasonably priced for 12 of us. He does one to ones (which are more expensive) or would organise a day to suit a group - but you may be miles away!

There are quite a few companies who do limit handling type days. These are normally conducted on disused airfields and the like, so are very safe from the point of view of hitting anything. Depending on what you are looking to get out of the experience, you can either do it in a hired car or your own. Because of the unique engine layout in the 911, you'd get much more out of doing such a course in your own car if you are looking to improve your driving of a 911. Just using a RWD car isn't going to teach you very much about how a 911 handles at and beyond the limit.
I've done rally days too, & while they're a lot of fun, they have almost nothing to teach you about road car handling as the technique is totally different. When was the last time you did a Scandinavian flick on the road? []
