Ran out of petrol

We have a 987 3.2 S - Left home with 11 miles showing on the OBC, did 2 miles and ran out. Our Son fetched 10litres of fuel, we put that in and it registered nothing, displayed nothing in range. we have since noticed that you can fill up and it will say range 350miles for a couple of miles then suddenly dronp to 300 after a few miles of steady driving.
We have a 993 with an OBC, we have had this car for years and can fully rely on the fuel range if it says it has 5 miles left it has.
Any one suffered the same fate ?

I do recall something about the OBC needing more than just a few litres to register if you have run dry (or almost dry).

I don't know why it showed 11 miles range though. I understood if you got below 15 miles or so then it showed "----" in the display.

From the manual:

"Note
If the tank is near empty and you top up with only
a small quantity of fuel, this cannot be registered
by the level gauge and calculation of the range remaining
is impossible."

and

"Range on remaining fuel
The range on remaining fuel is continuously recalculated
during the journey based on the fuel level,
current consumption and average consumption.
The more the fuel level falls, the more spontaneously
the display reacts. For this reason, the
range on remaining fuel is not displayed if less
than 9 miles (15 kilometers).
If the vehicle's inclination changes while driving or
refuelling, incorrect range information may temporarily
be given.
Note
If the tank is nearly empty and you top up with only
a small quantity of fuel, an accurate range on remaining
fuel is impossible."
