Rattle from behind driver under rear wing

On an '89 3.2 Carrera Targa, can anyone tell what is the component that is (or was) mounted under the rear offside wing, at the top directly behind the door post, as this has now come loose?

Given plenty of folks have looked at your post and nobody has responded, I think you need to give a better description. I don't have a Targa but I am nonetheless baffled.
 
Hi. I believe it's the oil pressure filter. Mines leaking at the mo, not a great deal but will need sorting out soon. Is there a pipe that runs from the filter to the front of the car. If so, this is the pipe from the oil filter to the thermostate. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

The unit is approx' 4" diameter and 10" long. 2 pipes from it go into the engine bay just in front of the oil tank and it looks as though one of then at least goes off somewhere behind the air flow meter. There is a 3rd pipe from the unit which seems to be a vent pipe.
I thought it might be an emissions cannister but I haven't been able to find any reference to one of these in any of the books I have.
It's quite heavy and I am tempted to leave it out but any advice?

Will Its what I said a Charcoal canister one pipe comes from your fuel tank another comes from the air filter putting negative air pressure to draw fumes from the tank
If you take it off you may get fumes in your car
 
My charcoal cannister also rattles occasionally. I know that the last time the airbox was opened, there was generous coating of grey dust inside the air filter housing which, I believe, was sucked out from the charcoal cannister.

I have just ordered a plug (from a 3.2 Club Sport) from the local OPC to block the intake to the airbox from the cannister to prevent this happening again. I will let you know if this causes any petrol fume smells from entering the car.

I know for certain that the Club Sport doesnt have a charcoal cannister fitted at all in the rear arch, so I cant believe it would cause too many problems if removed completely.

If the cannister were to be removed, I assume that simply to plug the pipes would not be a good idea particularly if this is the only vent to the tank!
Alternatively the pipes from the tank and airbox could be connected together directly via some sort of restrictor.

Can you then ditch the canister?
