Rattle from disc brake dust cover

Hi,

A littel help required from someone who is "mechanicaly challenged" - I have a rattle coming from my rear drivers side disc barke area, on closer inspection it appears the metal dust cover behind the disc brake is loose and is rattling. Is this an easy thing to rectify or is there some horribly complicated method by which this cover is attached ? i.e. could someone with only basic spanner handling skilss whip the wheel off and fix it in a jiffy or should I not bother trying ?

Thanks

Ian

They are very lightweight alloy and what usually happens is that the metal surrounding them gives way.
Either replacement of the piece from someone like PorschApart, or put a very large washer under the bolt head.
I also some folks just leave them off.

I was lucky to get some inexpensive replacements.

Snagaroo is that to get to the bolts you need to get the rear drum off, which can cause problems in itself.

I took my N/S drum off to do just this about 2 months ago, and re-bolted the cover with a large washer, as mentioned, under the bolt heads. I damaged the brake internals at the same time ... not expensively, but annoyingly ... if I was doing it again, I'd take the cover off and leave it off.

The dust guard on my 85 944 is bolted to the brake backplate with 4 bolts from the driveshaft side. You should be able to nip them up from that side or remove them one at a time and fit big washers. I've looked at my workshop manual and the PET and it shows it the same for all 944's.
