Rattle from exhaust and extended warranty

My 987 gen 2 boxster has developed a rattle from "I think" the exhaust, its there at idle, gets louder with gentle revs and then disappears as the revs rise.
The car is in overall good condition with 19000 miles.

My dealer tells me the extended warranty doesn't include exhausts, I suppose the only way I will find out if it is the exhaust is to take it in.
Anyone else had this "rattle" ?

Thanks,

I had same problem on 996 Turbo a number of years ago. It was indeed the heat shields which had to be re-welded (cost me £900!). Not covered by warranty!

A common rattle on the Boxster is from the heat shields above the silencers - the ones before the final central silencer. They tend to rust where the bolts go through and become loose. I fixed mine using a couple of large diameter Jubilee clips (put them right around the shield and silencer) and have had no issues since doing this a couple of years ago.

its booked in this friday at a local independent,

when I described the fault I was told probably heat shields as its a fairly comment fault, turns out one of their mechanics has spent time working for a Porsche dealer. Will report back with what they find.

From experience, another cause of an annoying rattle is from rusted exhaust clamps on the rear box. I recently replaced these which had failed completely....

As I wanted a better solution, I fitted stainless steel Mikalor clamps for a fraction of the cost of the rust-prone Porsche supplied items. It took less than 20 minutes to fit without jacking up the car. These cured the rattle completely...

Worth checking before replacing the heat shields.

Alan.

Whilst I'm sure this'll evoke various eyebrow raising, I simply took the heat shields off our 986. It took me a good five minutes.

It's been meecilessly thrashed, tracked, sat at idle for the odd hour and generally treat like the 'shopping car' that this little car is for us and, as yet, it's not gone up in flames, nor seen any detriment, even discolouration around the removed shields (which will heat to the same temp as the exhaust...) or complained in any way.

So perhaps another option. Probably not recommended by anyone else, except another member on here who has done exactly the same, but that's my experience.

Cheers,
