Thats the most likely culprit as being the only moving part that that would go 'quiet' when you depress the clutch.
Its quite common on higher mileage cars for the release bearing to dry up and start to rattle.
You could check for rattle/ play in the clutch fork by dropping the slave cylinder off. I'd be surprised if there was any play/rattle though - mostly the fork bearings just start to seize up and make the clutch actuation heavy (and pit the fork shaft) rather than rattle around.

btw - still waiting for my gearbox hanger, so no real progress on my car. I did bolt the torque tube to the clutch housing while I was waiting for the BMW oil to drain though..

It's a not difficult job per se (particularly on an S2 or Lux....) just time consuming and this can be double if there's nuts or bolts that haven't been apart for many years.
I'd guess ~ £900 in labour and then ~£200 for parts depending on the model you have ( You haven't specified which model of 944 you have).
Thats my best guess, but to be honest I'm a bit out of touch with Local Indie/specialist labour rates as I haven't paid anyone else to do work on my car for many years now ,
he says only slightly smuggly....... []

However, if you're going to pay that much you may as well have the whole Clutch system ( release bearing, friction plate & release bearing) replaced as it wont add that much extra to the bill.
If however you have appropriate tools & workspace and some home mechanicaning experience you could do it yourself with help and assistance from folks like myself on here !

Unless you know the clutch is new, you should think about replacing everything as it's a labour-intensive job. Frazerpart were about the best for a clutch package when I last looked in to it, about £450?
A 944 specialist can do it in 5 hours at the roadside (from experience) , obviously a bit less on a ramp. The only problem is that there aren't many 944 experts around, and they might not be local to you! It's the sort of job where you weigh up the cost of a specialist against the cost of the local guy who you're going to be paying to learn on the job?
You don't give your location in your profile, so hard to recommend somewhere.
I'd not expect much less than a grand, but it's a once-in-a-lifetime repair for most 944s.

Possibly, but unless you do a good advert with pictures, details of the car etc., you're trying to sell a 944 needing a clutch! [&o]
Sell it well. No rot needs good pictures of the underneath, and the inside of the sills. Detail all the recent history, age and conditon of tyres, belts etc.
Values are on the up for well-described cars, even if one or two jobs need doing.

Got the pictuires, thanks, so I'll post them here over the weekend.
Looking at the sills, I might be going mad but there's no line under the rear of the doors on either side? If they've been done that's a good thing, but people need to see internal shots to be sure it's been done properly.
Pop the vent in the door pillar and you have access to take a pic of the danger area at the rear of the inside cavity.
