Rattles, Thuds, etc

Help !!

Have had my car for 3 weeks now and I have to say that the rattles, thuds, etc are really getting on my nerves.

Have had the car inspected underneath and really couldn't find anything that is causing it. The drop link bushes have been replaced on the front and all other parts seem good.

Can not find find anything else that is obviously making the noise.

The car is running on 18" rims and does feel a lot firmer than my 993 on 17"'d.

Is this a characteristic of 996 's ?, as a newbie owner I need some help.

Thanks

Mark

Not in my experience. Lack of rattles and thuds etc in mine and every other one I've been in. Persevere with your dealer.

Bwahahahahaha -rattles and thuds!!!

Seriously though, seems to be a 996 trait. Try tyre pressures at 36 all around, but 18" WILL make the car seem 'crashier' than 17".

Mark no help but at least you are not alone. A car nut neighbour of mine had a theory that even though he loved his Boxster (hated the tiptronic box) he convinced himself it just wasn't as well built as a 996! At the time all Boxsters were made alongside 996's so I couldn't understand his logic. So his OPC gladly supplied him a brand new 996 Coupe and 6 months later he couldn't stand the racket any longer and sold the car on [:(]

He said the Boxster had the odd rattle or groan but the fixed head 996 was much worse and of course way more expensive ......

Apart from the rattles from the passenger seat when empty, the strange noise from inside the roof lining on the nearside, the odd clonk from the interior rear nearside, the sqeaking from the failure of the front suspension bushes, the engine lid rattles and the screams from the passenger I don't know what you are talking about.

It's that old saying "they don't make em like they used to". I am on my third 996 & they all suffered from rattles & squeaks, the OPC would fix one only for another to pop up elsewhere, much gnashing of teeth !!! The key is perseverance, if you take it back enough times they WILL fix it , aside from tightening screws they also use a silicon spray between leather bits !!! Best of luck. Incidentaly the 18 inch wheels don't make that much difference, more likely you have sports suspension on your car & the one you test drove didn't ?

Since taking delivery of my new 996 C2 (MY2002) last July, it's been back 3 times to have rattles sorted out in the sunroof area. Rear and drivers side glass refitted, exhaust tail pipes re aligned and tightened up!

To give my OPC the benefit of doubt they have had the car on the last two occasions for 3 days each and have now fixed the most irritating noise which was coming from the sunroof area just above the passsenger seat. However, I'm very reluctant to open it to test it out!

My passenger seat appears to rattle when not occupied and I have discovered that the seat belt buckle rattles on the seat back which is painted!

As Grant has already said they are not screwed together like they used to be!

I have a 1998 996 which suffers from just one rattle which is really annoying.
Its on the passenger side & appears to be coming from the rear - around the roof area.
A local specialist says that there are quite a few plastic pieces in the roof & these can squeek/rattle etc which possibly can be "fixed" with silicione spray.....if not the roof has to be opened up - not difficult but labour intensive I guess.

Mark - Your 996 is crashing over bumps ??

Well, you should try a Mini Cooper on 16's with BMW's "Sports Suspension Plus". It is plain crazy. I skip from bump to bump, and land with a crash - at 30mph !

Drives like a roller skate but bump-steers over ants.

(they did warn me, but I didn't listen).

I'm in this line up somewhere, just off to see the Italian Job - 100 mini's ! Excellent

Lucky you didn't go for the 17" wheels! I have two MCS's mine is a 52 plate 16" 5 Stars and the other half has an 03 July MCS same wheels & tyres but with the new softer dampening .... it just ever so slightly takes the edge of the problem but the good news is everything else about these new MINI's is just funtastic :ROFLMAO: and apparently MY04 cars due out next April time with the new Cabrio versions have heavily revised and improved suspension to address this one slight failing in the current crop [;)] I can't wait

Know how you feel.......however on a nice piece of black top a true delight.......

We have a 2003 Cooper on 17" & Sports susp plus = Rock hard but completely focussed. On a windy B road my S2000 did'nt feel as sure footed at similar speeds.

We have a Cooper S "Speedster" on order, if they ever make it.

We are so off topic, it isn't funny, but did you go to the Italian jpob pre-showing organised by your local BMW dealership ???

BTW, Francis Tuthill (he of rallying Porsche fame0 took the the keys to the Mini, and had a blast around the roads of Banbury....upon returning he reckoned that the turn-in and handling of the new Mini was simply superb next to any Porsche he had driven.

Praise indeed
