RATTLES

reevers

New member
I have recently purchased a 99, 996 C2 Tiptronic. I am suprised at the number of rattles coming from the areas around the windscreen and the sunroof.

As a new Porsche Owner I would appreciate any advice. Is this common and any explanation why this would be happening and remedies to resolve the problems??

I will of course be returning the car back to the Official Porsche Dealer, but would would appreciate other owners views before getting the Dealer's opinion!

Regards

The Porsche 996 is a high performance sports GT - not an executive saloon. Some rattles or trim noises, particularly on the more sporting models, are inevitable and more likely on an older car.

Of course many later 996s are far better, especially the 'facelift' (2002>) models, but Cabriolets and sunroof models obviously have more moving parts so are more susceptible.

Your dealer may be able to assist, but the best advice is to tilt the sunroof, listen to the engine/exhaust note (even better with PSE) and don't get too paranoid about the occasional rattle. Or, buy a Lexus.

I've had some issues with the windscreen - apparently aftermarket fitted screens can creak if not fitted exactly right. The OPC fixed mine up with some sealer tape and it's basically fine now - I get a slight trim rattle sometimes but it comes and goes so very difficult to track down.

My sunroof rattled in my coupe, and on the way to trade it in a plastic trim fell off the sunroof [] I disposed of the part on route and said nothing [;)].
Suspension is set for sports and not exactly comfort...perhaps thats where merc's going wrong!!..nope they rattle aswell

Porsche make a neoprene gasket (part no. 996-541-903-00) to fill the gap between the windscreen surround and the body. Even though my replacement screen was fitted in a OPC they neglected to fit this item and for months after the only silence was when it rained or after the car had been washed. I have enough left over from my repair so IM me and I will send it on to you.

Mine also rattles, had a new windscreen fitted by OPC twice, both orignal Porsche screens which were done under warranty and now i get an occasional rattle from there.

Also get a rattle from the sunroof and a new one from where I can pin point is the drivers door airbag!! [:(]

If you have any luck sorting yours can you please let us know?

Man of integrity - that's what we want !

Just goes to show that when buying second hand you really need to know what you are looking for !

I've been away for a week, so just picked up on this thread. There are several Porsche Technical Service Bulletins on the trim and window noises for early 996's, including one which shows the front and rear screen sealing modifications. If anyone wants copies, send me an email via my profile page. It's about 1Mb of pdf files, zipped into a single file.
