Rattling at tickover

Hi
My 944 auto has an annoying rattling at tickover. It is coming from the back of the engine from around the starter motor. When revved it disappears and only comes back when crawling or stationary. Car drives perfect with no problems accelerating or with kickdown.
It could be the flex plate loose??
Is this an easy fix or is it gearbox, torque tube out?
Anybody any other ideas?

Thanks
Adrian

Could you video it and post a clip on youtube? A rattle could come from so many sources! If it sounds more like a rattle behind the engine than a clatter inside the engine then I would hope its something exhaust related. If its more of a clatter than a rattle then it could be a broken valve spring.

It's definately a metallic rattling from the back of the engine. I thought it was exhaust but it still seems to me to be flex plate. I'm going to take a look this weekend but if it is flex plate or torque tube related is this a pain in the backside to do?
Thanks
Adrian

Just been underneath it and it is definately coming from the back of the starter motor. It is not engine related.
Any ideas on what to do next?
Thanks
Adrian

Sounds like the drive plate between the torque converter and the crankshaft has cracked, no other way but to remove the torque tube and drop the converter off, you'll find cracks around the bolts that mount it to the crank - without doubt.

Hi
Thanks for the info, I've had the starter off and a camera in it.
It looks like the is some sort of rubber damping between the starter ring and the engine. This has broken up and is causing the rattling. Is this what you have described?
Where is the best place to get one from?

Many thanks
Adrian
