My 987.2 had has a rattle in the silencer almost since I bought it 4 years ago.
It has not got worse, it has not dissapeared either!
on cold or hot start, the rattle appears once the cold start is completed, i.e. When tick over dies to 1000 rpm or so.
It goes away once above 1500 to the red line.
returns every time when on tickover.
Cant find any loose heat shields, so assume it is an internal baffle loose.

Question
Apart from OPC, when can I get a bog standard silencer from?
I don't want any louder or trick ones, just a standard silencer.

possible is dansk?

Dansk used to be good, but not so good now (in my experience with a 924S).
Had to take my one back after fitment - three weeks and the baffles were rattling! [8|]

Yes, I have had poor experiences with the company with restoration panels for my old 911.
are there any other alternatives?

Graham,

I would think that with your 10% Club discount the dealership network would be the cheapest option for a standard silencer replacement unless you’re able to source a used part, which is always going to be risky.

If you want a slightly sportier exhaust note there’s plenty of aftermarket choice from the likes of Fabspeed, Designtek, Milltek, Bora, etc., although it’s impossible to know if they’ll suit your requirements unless you’re able to experience them first-hand for different speed and load conditions. Milltelk I think have a good reputation, although unfortunately they don’t appear to have anything available for your 2.9L Boxster.

Thanks Jeff, you are on the same wavelength as I am.
We only cruise in our Boxster and with all the road tyrenoise, really don't want more intrusion!
Ill ask my OPC about a factory fresh unit, but will remove the original rattly one to see if it a shield loose first....
I have already tried all the shields I can access with the rear wheels off and a cold start, nothing obvious so assuming it is internal.

Graham,

Just a minor point but the left and right hand silencers have different part numbers, so I assume that they’re available separately if you’re keen to reduce the cost of replacement … until the other one fails! [:(]

Jeff, i too have a 2.9 with an exhaust rattle and am not convinced it's not a heatshield..... at 148k on the clock on my 2010 i'm not surprised so have booked in with MIJ walsall for replacement back boxes...... used them before on Audi and Corvette with excellent service, workmanship and price.

I'll let you know how i get on once it's done.
Si.
