Rattly Gearbox

I think I've been a bit stupid this afternoon whilst getting the car ready for the road again... Need your collective help to put my mind at rest or prepare me for the worst!

Car was up on axle stands as I have just changed oil, sorted brakes etc, so i started the engine to warm it up and check oil levels and decided to put the car in gear to run the gearbox through since its stood still for a while.

Like a fool I eased the clutch out most of the way whilst the handbrake was still on and something then made a pinging noise. The gearbox works fine in each gear and the hubs turn no problem but there is a rattle every now and again from the gearbox area which I have never noticed before.

I think I am going to drain the gearbox oil and check it for bits of metal but I'm not sure if any damage has been done to the clutch.

Any ideas?

Cheers

I doubt you would have damaged the box or the clutch.Did the engine stall - you do not say so assume it did not. By all means check the oil for anything but with the power the box/driveshafts handle, having it turn aginst the weak handbrakes on these cars - I can't see anything breaking from that alone. If I had to pick a weak link here it would be handbrake cable/shoes etc. Good luck!

The car did not stall as I pushed the clutch back in as soon as I realised something was not right, so hopefully will have saved any big bills.

Lesson learn't, don't start the car and run it in gear on axle stands [:D]

Will be fairly easy to check the brake shoe arrangement. (assume they same as 3.2s) the assembly sits inside the drum of the disk, as with all brake shoe arrangements there are springs in it, is it possible that this was the pinging sound?

I once had the spring break inside the drum of a (Boxster !!) --- made a horrible noise but was an easy repair.
