Maurice, it turned out that your tip about the windshield surround generating noise was correct. I borrowed a very fast acting sound meter and it indicated that all the air ducts and under dash systems were less noisey than the upper part of the windshield. I spent the afternoon road testing with tape over all the body joints. It turned out to be just 2" of the trailing edge of the upper windshield rubber insert wasn't sealed. I couldn't believe that it could generate such a volume of noise.
The car is now a delight to drive again.
