Re Normal Headlights not working

Hello all,

I've only had my 1996 993 C2 for two months so I am still getting used to it, and am still a newbie. I have a problem with the front lights not working (I understand the bulbs are upgraded from standard bulbs). The parking lights and high beams work but the normal headlights (both) do not work. I have checked both 15 amp fuses and they are fine (I have also replaced them to be on the safe side). Any suggestions on the 993 to fix this - it seems strange both bulbs will have blown.

My immediate thought would be a faulty lights on knob. When you tested the high beam, did you just flash them from the stalk (pull back) or turn on (push forward)? If the former, that would still work even with the low beam lights knob position 2 being faulty. If the latter, probably not the knob. Power is clearly getting to the light pod therefore your connections there must be sound. It does seam unlikely that both bulbs have blown, but I wouldn't rule it out completely. If the previous owner had the pods out to give them a good clean the bulbs could have taken a knock.

If the lamps have been upgraded, the person installing them may not have payed attention to the instructions and touched the lamp glass with his bare hands, which can cause the lamps to fail prematurely and possibly both around the same time? Thats my pennys worth!

I have known both bulbs fail at the same time.
I'm not sure if, one bulb blowing allows a current surge to the other?

I would remove the whole headlight pod then spray wd40 or similar to the slide in electrical connector and refit ensuring the lights are fully pulled in by the lever in the front boot.

I had an occasional problem on my 993tt where the lights wouldn't come on and I pressed on something under the dash near the light switch and presto they came on. Never did figure out what it was as I sold the car. Could just be the connector onto the light switch itself or similar.

I've removed the lights, changed the bulbs and problem fixed. I got confused with the fuse/relay box as there is a relay called light. The 993 Bible mentions the lights do not have a relay.

Pleased its sorted, although as they are 993 headlights you still won't be able to see where you are going!

Easily fixed, get some HIDS, I am lucky, I have factory Litronics, but I understand many have fitted aftermarket Hids with good results and far cheaper than the factory option!![;)]
