Re-spray Cost

Looking to get a full glass out re-spray in the same color. Any idea of costs in todays market. Has any one got any good recommendations as I don't mind traveling for a top job at the right price. My car is in a good overall condition but with the few dings and stone chips associated with a 20 year old car (1989 Turbo). With thanks Gary
 
There's been quite a few thread about this so it's worth a search here (best to limit the search within the last year otherwise the poor thing tends to get confused).

There are so many variables, it will depend upon your area, if you can find someone that wants to do a good job or just do a quick blow over, whether you have any rust, what you choose to replace in the way of seals, whether the painted is willing to accept cash...


For what it's worth I'd expect to be quoted £2k to 3k by most places.

 
There will be parts on top of that,plus some bits they only realise when they have pulled it apart,front wings,seals,trims,screws,clips......soon adds up but they will do a lovely job that will look pretty much as close to a new one as is possible with an old car.
 
Really all down to the prep work. My race car shell only cost me the paint, the labour was already included in the price so it was basically less the £200, I believe the labour involved would have been no more then a few hours. Having said that the car will still need a blow over and final prep when we complete the build which ISTR will cost me about £600. The majority of that £5000 cost will be in the work required to strip and prepare the car. Personally having done this to build a race car, if I was doing a road car I would do the same and strip the car back to a bare shell, acid dip and rebuild over perhaps a winter. The cost would be horrific if paying someone else to do all that prep work though, ISTR my brother said of the couple of reshells he did before my race car it was circa 200 hours work. Even if one got a big job discount of say £25 ph that is still a lot of money.

I don't think its worthwhile respraying any of our cars unless one is 100% about the underlying bodywork, as Mark says it can become a horror movie. Both of the wings from my S2 for example scrapped, and I hoped to sell them, they looked OK on the car.
 
I once mistakenly used a Porsche approved bodyshop, it was a dreadful mistake, despite the 'Premier' job that was promised they did a frankly below average (at best) job at a high cost. Very disappointing.

However I've seen the work that another bodyshop did for Mark and it was quite superb, so it just depends who you get to do they work and how passionate they are about doing it properly.
 
It is something that you really don't want to scrimp on. You're best getting some ball park quotes and budgeting double that. These things always come in a good wack more than quoted and then there are the usual 'while you're in there you might as well...' things. A good spray job isn't cheap (one worth having at least), whichever way you cut it. you can reduce costs by doing all the required disassembly and assembly work yourself, and maybe even the prep work, but then logistics get tricky.
 
When I got my 911SC repainted I was quoted £2500 but ended up £4500 because once they got it stripped down they found other things that needed doing or should be done whilst it was apart, they gave me a choice if I wanted it done or not, they always asked.
Then replacing seals and things add to the cost.
This was a glass out, doors off,sun roof out, lids off job.
A friend of mine had his 1974 Carrera bare metal resprayed after stripping the car himself at a cost of over £7000 and there was not much to do in terms of bodywork.
There are good body work shops and bad, you pays your money & takes your choice!
