re starter motor

Can anyone help me with this strange one.When the car has been idle for a couple of days you turn the key engine fire up but it is as though the bendix drive on the starter motor is not clearing as fast as it should then you get a rattle for a couple of seconds then goes quiet,this only happens when stood for a day or so and when you start up when you have been out in it everthing is fine and normal.Just started now after been stood in from yesterday morning got the rattle switched off then started again everthing just as normal

Most likely hydraulic tappets noise. They can tend to drain out, then on start up make clicking noise until filled with oil again, usually a couple of seconds.
