Hi,

I put some oil in the 993 this morning before a run as ai knew it was low-ish, the engine was still cold, but had an idea that i'd be ok with a half litre or so, anyway all is ok, when at operating temp the oil level guage shows around the 1 o'clock position.

Heres the Question:

When i was putting oil in, it backed up slightly in the filler pipe and run down the inside of engine compartment, and ever since its taken two attempts to start the car, on the first attempt it makes a kind of rough knock/chug sound then i high pitched whine???(sounds electrical-ish) ?, wonder if it was the starter motor ???.

After this i turn the key to off, they try to start again, and it starts normally, is there anything i may need to check and clean ie. where the oil might of run on to !, it was starting fine until the oil incident.

Once the car is running there are no problems, drives normally.

Any help please.

I think your starting problems and the oil spillage are coincidental. Check the starter motor as that sounds the most likely.
 
Where is the starter located within the engine compartment - near the oil pipe ???, i looked with a torch but cannot see anything.

Seriously, it sounds like your oil spillage might have got to the starter pinion .. when the starter spins it forces the pinion into the ring gear of the flywheel. If it doesn't engage the starter will whir furiously - so an effect like choong ! .. whizzz !

Would i be able to access the pinion "inside engine bay", if so whereabouts, obviously has the cause was spilt oil would it be an easy fix !, wipe off and clean.
 
Hi Nick,

Do these starter motors have a separate solenoid? Maurice will be able to advise us on that one. Sounds like you have an intermittently sticking starter solenoid to me. I would use the car as much as possible over the next few days. A gentle tap with a wooden mallet can sometimes free sticky solenoids, but be careful, don't go the whole hog & use a "Birmingham Spanner". (Apologies to anyone from Birmingham [:)]). Maybe it will sort itself after the long sit in two bodyshops, maybe not. There's no doubt that these cars need to be exercised regularly.

I've done the oil spillage one too, after filling car with Mobil 1 too quickly. Won't make that mistake again.

Incidentally, changed the front pads & bled the brakes on my better half's 5-year-old VW Sharan today. Now that was a horrrrible job. Filthy black brake fluid from every caliper and it's been dealer-serviced all its life. Hmmmm.

The problem appears to be fixing itself, spilt oil must be slowly burning away or drying up !.
