Real newbie question about services...

Hey all,

Apologies for the newbie question [8|] (my newly-acquired 944S is my first Porsche and first car), but what exactly gets done in a service, what should I expect?
I had my 944 serviced just after I bought it, and was in a rush so didn't really chat to the mechanic about it, but of course it just says 'full service' on the invoice.
Do they change the oil, or is that another job?

Welcome to Porsche (and car) ownership[:)]
I'm far from a tekkie but I would expect a full service to include an oil change; I'm sure you will get all the technical help you need on the 944 part of the forum
happy motoring, enjoy[8D]

Ian,
I'm 12 moths into 944 ownership so am still a bit new to these issues so i'm sure others will be able to add to my comments/experiances. On my Major 12k miles service there was a kit that was fitted which included oil filter, air filter, spark plugs, fuel filter. I supplied the oil to the mechanic (15w30 Magnatec) and I also supplied some Slick 50. Upon picking the car up the mechanic gave me a rundown of all the checks he had performed which included: tyre wear, brake fluid level, engine coolant concentration, condition of suspension components, condition of brake components (disk/pad wear, signs of pipe corrosion) and a general summary of the overall condition. He also washed and valeted the car. This was all for £230 (he subtracted the price I payed for the materials I supplied from this cost).

I've not had a minor 6k mile service as I think they are unneccessary if you drive your car regularly but at the specialist I use is basically an oil and filter change and various cursory checks as per the major service.

My advice would be to find a good specialist who is happy to give you the time to chat about your car.

You're kidding, right? Do you know how hard a time the oil gets in a turbocharged application? Porsche set 12k intervals for all 944's except the Turbo for a reason.
