Rear “clunk”

Hi all. I’ve had a ”clunk” noise from the rear when taking up drive from a standstill. Only seems to happen when a bit more spirited pull-off.
l’m replacing my silencers and l noticed that after putting the car on axle stands and then removing the rear wheel nuts (with the gear selector in park and rear wheels off the ground) that the passenger side was solid when undoing the nuts but the driver side had movement as l undid the nuts. l could "rock” the wheel as if there was slack in the driveshaft.
Could this be the "clunk”?
Should there be no slack on the driveshaft?

Any comments welcome.

l plan to check all around when l’ve completed removing the silencers tomorrow.

Thanks

I'd be tempted to check the engine and transmission mounts first. I can't remember for sure, but I recall a bit of backlash in the drive shafts. (Or maybe its my imagination).

Pretty certain there is an allowable amount of play in the driveshafts. The best way is to get the car on a lift to check as Richard mentioned, drive train components and rear suspension links.

Thanks for replies.

I’ve removed engine mounts and they’re shot. Squelchy and leaking. Manufacturing stamp is wk51 01 so are original.
New ones coming tomorrow.
