rear axle bearing

Heard knocking from the passenger side rear a couple of days ago. Had a look today, and suspect the hub bearing. One thing puzzling me though, with the rear of the car jacked up, pulling on the wheel inboard to outboard the axle moves.

I suspected the axle nut however it seems fully tightened, not sure about the inboard side of the axle, attached by 6 cheese head bolts havn't been able to check.

Apart from the single bearing (turbo) on my axle could there be anything else worn within or broken. From searching it looks like i might need various special tools and a kin large breaker bar. Worth the hassle?

lots of possibilities but i would suspect the wishbone inserts and the CV joint possibly the wheel bearing but I've never known one allow lateral movement like that without giving months of warning .The wheel would be wobbling all over the place.
Check the wishbone arm inserts then pull the cv joint cover back and observe the cv joint whilst someone pulls and pushes your wheel again.
If you took it to a local garage they could put it on a ramp and diagnose the problem in 2 minutes probably without charge .
 
well after purchasing the biggest breaker bar i could find, all that was needed was tightening the axle nut ( 2 revs). Checked the play in the bearing with the wheel back on again and can't detect any movement. Thanks Peanut for persuading me to have a go, glad I didn't book it in anywhere. Had some work done on the rear axle last year, maybe they didn't torque it to the right setting[:mad:] off to check t'other.

Didn't think so as the nut is supposed to be a self locking nut. Usually split pins are used with castlated -(sp) nuts. I think thread lock maybe the way to go

Correct............and non reusable!! I personally would highly recommend new nuts each time as they must have stretched threads after being torqued up to the Porsche specified figures.
 
well done Si . [:D] I'll have to get around to some of my own little jobs now that its stopped blowing a gale outside.
