Rear Bearing Wear Noises

What are generally considered the signs that one's rear wheel bearings are on the way out?

I know the theory and have plenty of experience from other cars. I have what I think are the signs but with all the other "normal" noises it's not that easy to tell. I know how my car sounds so well after 14 years that I think somethings not right....so thought I'd ask what others have experienced from their 944s.

One's chauffeur drives the car, while one's butler/gardener/dresser removes the carpet from beneath the tailgate , and travels in the back listening for untoward noises.
 
Usually gets worse/better when swerving from side to side - loaded louder, unloaded quieter. Jack it up and check for play?
