rear bearing.. "while I'm in there..."

Hi All,

I'm planning on sorting my rear wheel bearing this weekend as the noise has become annoying, I'm not planning on taking the trailing arm off so I've assumed theres not much else I can do, but I thought I'd put the question out there - is there anything else worth doing while I'm in there? I'll be changing the gearbox oil, but thats simply because it'l be up in the air :p
 
Hi Alex,

Rear ARB bushes checked? Slap some grease/Waxoyl on the fuel lines over the torsion bar?

You could take lots of pictures and post a Technical Article on your Wheel bearing change, if you have the time!

I take your using the tool that I sent through from Arnnworx ?

Good luck and make sure you've got a very long bar or piece of scaffold to undo the rear hub nuts !
 
Might be worth doing the rear brake backing plates while you're in there. It is the sort of part that if it isn't ready to be changed now it wont have much life left in it and is a pain to do unless you're in there for something else.
 
"Doing" what to them? Replacing them?

(There are no backing plates on my S2 - one caused problems so I removed them all.)

That's what I mean Oli, it isn't a job worth doing in its own right, but while you're in there doing something else you may as well replace them - they're pretty cheap so why not? Just because they don't serve any real significant purpose they should be there so you may as well have them (if you know what I mean!)
 
Cheers for that, I replaced the backing plates last year when I refurbed the brakes - they had rotted through where they are bolted on.

I'll have a good look underneath and grab my camera to take pics. I did this for the brakes but then took 2 pics and forgot to take any more......
 
Well that hub nut was easy! I got a 1m breaker bar with a piece of scaffolding over and it popped straight off. My problem now is the hub, I have the CV bolts off, had to buy the 12spline bit for them - but I don't have a slide hammer. I can't get the CV joint out of the trailing arm to try at it from the back which is suggested in the destructions I should be able to do. Anyone have any tips for getting the hub out?

In my experience (of 3 bearing replacements) the splinded stub (which you removed the nut from) should slide out of the hub quite easily.

I removed the drive shaft at the inner end and tapped the stub gently with a wooden block (with the nut in position on the stub - flush with the end for thread protection/support).

I then used the arnnworx tool and if you keep the bearing square it will go in easily (I oiled the outer surface)

Thanks, I was looking at the other end of the drive shaft and thinking of removing it, put the whole thing out of the way and to give me clearance but didn't want to start taking things apart if I didn't need too.

EDIT: Reet, got the shaft off and the axle stub out, but the hub still refuses to budge, I have a feeling I'm going to need a slide hammer after all....

I think you will, I just refreshed my memory on Clarks garage, search site, wheel bearing, and it shows an exploded diagram.

There's a circlip on the inside of the bearing and I think it needs to come out to get the tool to pull the bearing outer.
