Rear Brake Disc Cover Plates

Imagine my surprise when I got a price for these from OPC Leicester today. Front ones £16, rear ones £110! They couldn't even explain the price. Things are no better at the other usual suspects either. At that price I would rather do without! So anybody know any alternative suppliers or part numbers? Anything that can be adapted?

Its a ridiculous amount of money for a piece of pressed metal that they have had the dye for umpteen years, given that the our cars are only ever getting older surely demand for these would be greater now than it has been for a long time, I get the impression that various parts prices have been quietly creeping up and up.

Has anyone had their PCGB discount itemised on their receipts? every time I mention I get told "oh we have applied that already".

Removed them both front and rear from my car. I'm not entirely sure what purpose they perform but I haven't missed them.

Rear ones will remain off I think (one fell of long time ago anyway). Less braking and less dust back there. At £16 for the fronts with extra braking and dust I think in will replace those.

Rob,

Why do the back plates contribute to extra braking? I always assumed that they interfered with the cooling of the disks so reduced the braking fractionally, and never understood what they were for.

Oli.

They just help to keep dust and crap off the disk. Less of that generated at the rear so no biggy for me. At least that's the idea anyway. What they actually contribute in the real world is anyone's guess.

Oddly, they assist with brake cooling by directing the air-flow correctly. I've run both with and without them on the track and suffered from heat-induced brake shudder when they aren't fitted.
