rear brake dust plates

is it really necessary to have them fitted, one of mine has disitegrated with time and had the other one taken off yesterday when handbrake getting fixed (release spring replaced and not worn shoes as suspected).

What difference will it make, is it as obvious as ther ewill simply be more brake dust on the alloys now ?

I think they are there to stop stones and dirt getting onto the disc and caliper, rather than keep the brakedust off the alloy.

I've never removed the ones on my 944, but have just replaced the ones on my BM, as they were also used to secure the pins for the handbrake shoes.

thank makes more sense

i'll probably get them replaced sometime this year if it isnt urgent

LOLssss i havbe got to laugh, now that the rattle has gone (courtesy of having only rear brake dust plat removed) i have a strange metalic noise like it is rubbing every rotation of the wheel, unfotunately when you jack the car up and turn the wheel by hand it is not there, place it back down on the road and drive slowly and it can be heard again ! grrrrrrrr

Check out this thread.... here... I had someone else work on this problem so never got to the bottom off what was scrapping/ rattling where and why. It does seem that if parts are not replaced exactly right, the whole shooting match goes to the wall. The results of that I have seen.

cheersw, i had the drivers side spring replaced to sort the noise on that side, there was no noise on the passenger side at that time - i am wondering if replacing it on one side has caused a problem on te other. It defo isnt the disc cover plates as they are removed on both sides, can only try the pressing brakes when it happens and see if it goes away, if it does then it must be caliper replated.

Ta much, the curiosity grows stronger [:(]
