Rear bumper removal

How does one go about removing the rear bumper please ?Once removed, can one replace the heat shields mounted on the exhaust system easily or is it a major dismantling job?

I`ve done this on my last 993 C2, its not that difficult. Take all the rear lights off and that allows access to the upper fixings. There are a few speed screws in the rear wheel arches where bumper meets the rear wings. 4 speed screws at the bottom which support the bumper to the 4 steel tubular brackets that bolts to the bodywork. It is easier if you remove the rear silencers which is also quite easy to do, its best to get new bolts for the exhaust clamps, they do corrode quite badly.

I did all the heatshields and also the 4 tubular support brackets at the same time as 2 of them had broken due to corrosion. I painted the support brackets with a few coats of hammerite first as the protective coating on them is very poor. The bolts that hold the heatshields to the exhaust system required a welding torch to free them off as they were very badly corroded.

It's worth putting masking tape on the bodyworkd above the bumper before sliding it off, otherwise it can scratch the bodywork. I found out the hard way.

Also, you can access most of the nuts and bolts by raisng the car on a jack and reaching underneath the wheelarch. No need to actually remove the wheel.

You can actually replace the heatshields on the back boxs and also the shield on the catalytic converter without removing the bumper.

Good luck.

Thank you for the advice. As it happens, I just went out and got on with it before reading any of your replies and have now stripped the heatshields out which need replacing and the two inner bumper support braces which had corroded badly.(I had already replaced the two immediately behind the rear wheels some time ago.)The reason for my wanting to replace the heatshields was because I was getting a knocking from the rear end and it was because all the holes, where the mounting bolts hold the bigger heatshield on, had corroded away and it was just flapping around under the bumper............
I have now ordered all the necessary parts from Porsche, heatshields x4,bumper stays x2, and all new fixings.Cost just over £400.Should be in on Tuesday apparently. Will waxoyl various parts, such as those bumper stays before reassembly.
Richard.
