Rear bumper support rust

I need to replace my bumper support tubes as they've rotted away. Of more concern is corrosion on the chassis bracket where these attach to. They're described simply as 'reinforcement' on PET, part numbers 964.502.161.00 and 964.502.162.00 for left and right-hand sides. Does anyone know if they are welded to the main chassis rails or bolted on? Also, has anyone else had to replace these and if so did the bodyshop manage to do so by only taking the bumper off, or did the engine need to come out for access? It would be useful info to have so that I can better advise my bodyshop.

The following thread has some good pictures of the bracket in question:- Bumper support brackets

I recently replaced the bumper support tubes. I didn't look closely at the reinforcement bracket put presumed that it was welded on to the chassis. If it just bolted on then PET would show the bolts required in the diagram (which it doesn't). I gave mine a scrub down and and found that the bracket was still coated in the protective sealant:

I bought a set of aftermarket support tubes. The rear ones aren't as intricate as the originals but they were half the price. Here's the front and rear tube for one side:

Thanks Steve, yes I suspect you're right about it being welded. Where did you obtain the aftermarket bumper supports from? I have replaced the forward pair; but the rearward (smaller) pair could do with replacement.

Hi Neil,

I got them from Roger Harradine - they were advertised in Porsche Post earlier this year. The brackets are £54.00 per corner and include S/S bolts, nuts and washers as well as postage. i.e. he supplies both tubes for each side so you'll have to ask if he will sell individual tubes since you've already got new front ones.

His e-mail is: garthrw AT hotmail DOT com

Note that as I said above, the rear tubes are not identical to Porsche original because they don't have the extra small arm that attaches to the chassis. However, that bit is so thin that it usually rusts through within a year anyway!
